Beijing, July 17: China rejected suggestions that it had snubbed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh by not extending an invitation for the Olympics opening ceremony and said Indian leaders were welcome to the event.

Beijing also clarified that it is the national Olympic committee of the nation concerned which invites the head of a government or state.

"As the host of Beijing Olympics, China welcomes heads of states, including Indian leaders to attend the relevant activities (Olympic opening ceremony)," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao told a regular bi-weekly media briefing.

He was responding to a query on reports in a section of the Indian press that China had invited UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi to the opening ceremony of Olympics, while ignoring premier Singh.

"China attaches great importance to strategic partnership with India and exchanges with Indian leaders. The report is not in line with the fact and is not beneficial to our bilateral relations," he said.

He also said that the heads of states and governments have been invited to the Olympic Games.

"I would like to reiterate here that according to the IOC (International Olympic Committee) stipulation and the Olympic custom, heads of governments and states shall be invited by the Olympic Committees of their own countries and attend the Olympics as accredited distinguished guests. We respect the decision of the Olympic Committees," he said.

China Snub Inidan PM by Nima soni on 11 Aug 2008

It is apalling that China goes sucking up to all the Western and European leaders in the Olympics and ignores the prime minister of it's neighbouring country. Worse still, China invited Sonia Gandhi, who has no official standing. This is just another slap in the face of Indians who are still sore about Tibet and then Kashmir. I, for one, and my family, refuse to watch the olympics, except games when Indian players are in it.

little chink Liu Jianchao by shitonchna on 07 Aug 2008

This little chin ky man Liu Jiancho is so foo lish, if he says that strategic patrtnership between India and china is important, then why do they have such a stpuid Olympic comitee in place where they are not mature enough to decide on whom to call. Clearly, hes made a joke of chinatown by saying so.Having said that, china has made a fo ol out of itself once again, talking in its nasal tone and third class english.

The Real PM by hons on 18 Jul 2008

How long will be reactive society? by Baatul on 18 Jul 2008

India is still a reactive society. It hardly acts fearing risks and pitfalls. Its time we want to hear "India has done and Country XYZ reacting". Even in the hockey match between India/Pak in Hyderabad, Indians only reacted. This means the guys took the shots before order was restored and the Paki boys didn't get a single hit. The same thing is happening in the border as well. Even in Britain or USA, Indians never attack but retaliate. Its time we reversed this trend.

Hilarious.... by Confused on 18 Jul 2008

Why blame China for what Mr. Kalmadi or whoever UPA put at the helm of Indian Olympic Committee, who invited Mrs. Sonia G instead of Mr. Singh ?

KARAT WENT AND CRIED TO CHINESE TO GIVE HIM SOME FACE SAVER AGAINST MM SINGH by DESH PREMI on 18 Jul 2008

KARAT IS THE AGENT OF BEIJING AND HE MUST HAVE TOLD HIS MASTERS IN CHINA HOW HE WAS SHOOED AWAY BY MMSINGH AND PARTY. SO TO TAKE REVENGE THEY DID NOT INVITE MM SINGH, BUT WE INDIANS ARE PROUD OF HIM.

Olympics and CPM by H. Chauhan on 18 Jul 2008

So is this the country, CPM etc. are more loyal to than their own country? Western countries have never made such a gaff. They claim that they want India to be neutral but they refuse to accept the fact China and also Russia will be able to provide materials for India's needs under the agreement. China is no more communist in practical sense than UK and Canada other than restrictions on human rights and freedoms.

GOONS AND ONLY MONEY.... by BABUBHAI PATEL on 18 Jul 2008

MM SINGH OR SONIA,,,"""CHINA SAYS THEY ARE WELCOME TO COME ((( NO INVITATION !!!!))) ANDBUSH SAYS " HE WILL LOOK INTO ISI ROLE IN AFGHANISTAN,BECAUSE kARZAI BELIEVES IT,(((NOT BECAUSE MM SINGH KEPTSHOUTING OR MANY INDIANS DIED IN A BLAST ....))) AND WE KNOW HOW PAKISTAN TREATSTHESE GOONS DESPITE THE CONGI'S "KISSING FEET CONTEST."" ANY NOTION ABOUT CONGI'S INDIA !!!!!AS THE GOONS KEEP PROCLAIMING IN THE CLOSED ROOM ????

Simple Solution by Anant on 17 Jul 2008

Sonia Gandhi should politely turn down the invitation and no one from the government should go there. Obviously Chinese did not like the Indo-US relation advanced by MM Singh. The other reason can be Karat approaching and advising China to ignore the PM since they are very anti-MM Singh.

Visas to Indians by Visas to Indians on 17 Jul 2008

olympics invtation by samy on 17 Jul 2008

china snubs by C2 on 17 Jul 2008

China did not snub Manmohan, but the entire nation, by not inviting him but his boss Sonia to the Olympics. By ignoring the people's rep and inviting a leader of a family party, the Chinese have insulted us Indians, who nevertheless have no pride left in us. If what the Chinese is true and the invitation was sent on the behest of the Indian Olympic Committee, the Indian committee president shd b hanged in India Gate, his cohorts slapped with chappals. Unfortunately we have only traitors and back stabbers and power brokers in this nation to rule us. I wish that all Indians protest against this action by not watching the Olympics on TV.

Pm snubbed by k.madhukar on 17 Jul 2008

to day's ad in news papers regarding opening of Krishnapatna port( I am baffled how it is called 'gate way to South east Asia')gives an impression that the port was built by congress party with its own money. If it is built by tax payers money, then it should have been innaugerated by PM and not by Sonia. As some one pointed out, our own sychophantic leadres like Rajshekhar reddy snubs Manmohoan Singh, how can we blame Chinese

pm and olimpics by k.madhukar on 17 Jul 2008

Chinese are clever people and know who is the real Prime minister in India.why would they waste thier time on a dummy who , in case of nuclear deal, is in any case ,not playing ball with thier fifth columnists here. Now that Sonia is going whole hog with the nuclear deal, it would be interesting to watch how sonia will be treated in China if she choses to attend the opening ceremoney.Any way , we Indians of non-congress variety, are grateful to chinese for telling us what the world thinks of a country which has two prime ministers, one dummy and the real one in shadows without accountability.

We didn't snub Manmohan on Olympic visit, clarifies China by Sastry on 17 Jul 2008

Why bother about China extending invitation to Sonia Gandhiji but not extending invitation to Manmohan Singh? Lots of Congress leaders, Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, routinely do it in India. Manmohan Singh and his admirers may hate to admit it but when it comes to showing who is the real boss in Congress party and government, every finger points to Sonia Gandhiji. Manmohan Singh is just a place holder.

Sastryji's subtlety!!! by G. Din on 18 Jul 2008

Sonia Gandhi is "Sonia Gandhiji" and poor ManMoran is simply "ManMoran". You have expressed the whole thing very succinctly, Sastryji!

IF CHINA INSULTS, WE SHOULD ACT STRONGLY. by RAJIV SHAH on 17 Jul 2008

INDIA MUST STAND FIRM TO PROTECT THE P.M.'S DIGNITY. EVEN THOUGH I AM AGAINST PRO-MUSLIM POLICIES OF MMS, STILL HE IS THE HEAD OF THE GOVT. OF OUR COUTNRY AND WE SHOULD NOT ALLOW ANY INSULT TO HIM OR HIS OFFICE BY A FOREGIN POWER, BE IT PAKI AND CHINA OR ANYBODY..

CHINA KNOWS WHO IS THE P.M. by Sonia Chamcha. on 17 Jul 2008

Actually china know who is the real PM of India. Even Mr. Singh seems to agree to that.
