Kochi, January 1: New Year festivities turned into a nightmarish experience for many foreigners at the Fort Kochi beach in Kochi as some revellers allegedly harassed and molested some of the female tourists.

Many of the tourists made a hurried exit from the beach last night after virtually being driven to tears by the revellers.

Some youngsters allegedly misbehaved with the teenaged daughter of a Swedish tourist, Christon, who had come all the way to Kochi to celebrate New Year with his family, police said.

"We respect Indian women and expect the same from Indian men towards our ladies," an angry Christon said, adding such behaviour would only harm the state's interests.

Another woman, who was part of a group of foreign tourists, was also allegedly molested, police said.

A posse of police personnel posted at the venue were of little help as they failed to control the hecklers.

Though the tourists have not lodged any complaint, police however, has registered a suo motu case, City Police Commissioner, Manoj Abraham said.

A juvenile has been arrested in connection with the incident.

A huge Santa was also burnt at the beach as part of the festivities last night.

i can believe that villager type ppl are involved in these types of incidents- the poor ones. however i think it is bad to paint a picture that all indian men are like this. most indian that are educated would never disrespect a women - wherever she is from. having said that, I am pretty ashamed because of those villager types that bring our name down.

shameful by vishal on 04 Jan 2008

As an Indian, it makes me hang my head in shame. India may be progressing in terms of economy but in all other matters it seems to be regressing to the dark ages. What i don't understand is why are handful of molesters allowed to get away with such things in a crowded place. Mob justice is the need of the hour. Lynch some of these bastards and the next time a would be molester will think twice before putting his hands on some woman.

Swedish teenager molested by Another molested Swedish tourist on 04 Jan 2008

It is important to realise that this happens to many female foreign tourists, who traveles to India. However,in this case it is especially frighening as the girl's father was close by and the men continued to group the girl while the cameras were rolling. Nothing seems to have inhibitied their behaviour. Some 15 years ago, I celebrated New year's Eve in Mumbai (Bombay). Suddenly, my husband and I was surrounded by 20 - 30 boys/men. The men started to molest me heavily. I screamed and my husband tried to defend me. The police heard my screams and came running and started to hit the men with sticks to separate the group. I was in a desperate chock and cried violently but what could I do. The group had dispersed and there was noone to point out as the molesters were a group of men without faces ... However, let us not forget that India is one of the most beautyful country, rich in history and culture enhanced with extremly friendly, passionate and warm people.

not going to be supporting india by not a tourist now on 04 Jan 2008

I am very sad because I have been planning a trip to India and the more I read about going there the less I want to go. It's a real shame that women aren't respected pretty much anywhere even though they are the givers of all human life...disgusting behavior animal-like men. All men must think about their mothers, sisters, wives, and daughters and think to themselves "Would I want this to happen to them?"

We dont respect our women?!!!! by SR on 01 Jan 2008

That is utter crap! India is only country and Hinduism is only religion where God is recognised in female form and worshipped. Manu smriti is not a shastra, its his personal opinion and philosophy, and Hindus dont have to accept that. Where in Vedas or Geeta Women are not respected? Dont try to subjugate our concious or at least learn ur own history and religion first before making cliams that we dont respect our women!

We need to improve on our descency and behaviour. by Anand Babu on 01 Jan 2008

There is some thing we need to learn from the western culture here. They need not do like this, they have other means of enjoyment. Is this happening only in Kerala? Anyway, who is to blame for this type of behaviour? In a crowd if there are miscreants police should have isolated them as a precautionary measure. Not only for the foreigners, local women too will be harassed by these people. They are youngsters and doing things on impulse. In a society like ours these are happening everyday, somewhere. It is very shame our behaviuor is not improving. This is where our education system have to play a part. Many Indians do not even know how to use a toilet properly and hygenically. High time we educate our people. For a state like kerala where lot of people depend on the tourism for a living the state will have to pay a very huge price. This type of negative news are well published by foreign media overseas. The stupid communists ruling the state and the chamcha corrupt nepotic congress opposition alternatively ruled and ruined this state. Since the peole of the state will not change, and initiate a change, hope God will act on his own state.

Shame! Who are thye? by anonymous on 01 Jan 2008

Who are these people? That must be revealed! Are these people the ones who have no interest in pride of India, i.e. who are Indians for namesake but sing songs for our neighbours. Are these the same kind of people who probably hurled racial abuse at Australians and brought us bad name? Shame!

Shame on "God's Own Country " , worse than Delhi by Abhi S on 02 Jan 2008

This ia real shame for we South Indians . Kerala has put all of us south Indians under a blanket of shame . How do they now portray their state as God's own country . This thing was quiet expected in places like Delhi and Rajasthan , but kerela ? I can't imagine . This is a big shame for we all Indians . remember this news will spread to every part of the world and bring bad name to Indians and especially south india as being perverts and psychos .

Punish them by arundhati on 01 Jan 2008

It is a disgrace to Indians in particular and we should not leave it like that. The people involved in this act must be caught. I also believe that they should not be let off lightly and dealt with severely.

Morals - Media influence by M V Chilukuri on 01 Jan 2008

This is due to low values of morals in current generation. Also, there was no value for morals, as even politicians, bureaucrats, film stars are broadcast their degenerated life style! It's time for Indians to know that Indian movies have made a mess of Indian culture! If educated and rich do not follow, who else will follow them?

Athithi Devo bhava by Venka on 01 Jan 2008

Rightly said. Culture of Bharath is AthithiDevo bhava. Govt of Kerala has to deal with this behaviour of revellers firmly to show that Kerala which is thriving on tourism is safe place for tourists and its people will honour the diginity of the visitors.

Respect for foreign ladies by Meghadut on 01 Jan 2008

Atithi in Bharath refers to a guest and not to a White racist minded tourist who has come to drink and dance to celebrate the so called new year. In the culture of Bharath New Year will be celebrated on Makar Sankranti day with puja and prasadam. Tourists can come to Indian homes as atithi and receive prasadam on this day.
