New Delhi, March 8: Harbhajan Singh has stoked the controversy which engulfed him on the tour of Australia, describing the world's top-ranked team as 'arrogant' and criticising some of their players.

"They (Australia) are an arrogant side," he told a tabloid. "They don't mingle with rival teams. We knew it from the start but we never expected them to give us so much crap on the field."

Harbhajan was embroiled in a racism row after being accused by Australia all-rounder Andrew Symonds of calling him a monkey in the second Test in Sydney.

He denied it and was later cleared of racial abuse by governing body, the International Cricket Council (ICC), but found guilty of the lesser offence of using abusive language.

Opening batsman Matthew Hayden was later reprimanded by Cricket Australia for calling the India off-spinner an 'obnoxious weed'.

Harbhajan returned home to a hero's welcome on Thursday after India had beaten world champions Australia 2-0 in the finals of the ODI tri-series.

ABUSIVE LANGUAGE

He said it was tough to concentrate on the game after Sydney where ICC appeals commissioner John Hansen downgraded the charge against him.

"It was of course very difficult to focus on cricket after that Sydney incident," said the spinner. "It was like Harbhajan versus Australia after that. But then to come back and play the (fourth and) last Test in Adelaide and to perform there was an experience that has made me a much stronger individual."

India lost the Test series 2-1.

Harbhajan criticised Hayden and wicketkeeper-batsman Adam Gilchrist, who retired from international cricket at the end of the tri-series.

"There are times when he doesn't let an opportunity go to waste and says nasty things on the field."

Harbhajan, though, praised paceman Brett Lee.

"Brett Lee never spoke in the same manner as the rest of his teammates," he said. "He never uttered any nonsense to us and kept visiting our dressing room even after Sydney. I was proud of the way our team played and I believe we have the potential to be the No. 1 side in the world."

Australia by Sheena on 10 Mar 2008

Harby you are right. We have lived in australia for long. But the aussies do not mingle with people from other countries. They just tolerate you , but will not accept you as a friend. As the aussie team had fears of losing, so does the rest of the people fear people from other countries ie migrants and stay away from them.

niranjan wags his tail again. by praveen on 10 Mar 2008

ICC seems to jump up and down at the beck and call of CA, why not with all the angloes dominating the refereeing, umpiring and decision-making. Why did'nt the ICC investigate hayden's defending his insults on Bhajji after the reprimand circus from CA? our niranjan seems quick

'reprimand'??? by prakash on 10 Mar 2008

what was the so-called 'reprimand' from CA and that too when hayden comes out in public on channel-9 and says he has done 'nothing wrong' in insulting Bhajji. his media backers agreed saying 'hayden said what the team feels about Harbhajan'. Well, Bhajji has yet to say what Indians think about hayden, symonds and other big-mouthed *****

Aussies Cry Babies of Cricket by raj on 10 Mar 2008

Hey guys I believe Aussies are the worst loosers in the world when they are losing they start crying like babies poor guys then talk of fair play and ball tampering and racisms whereas they are known to be the biggest sledgers and by far the racist country in the world and regarding crowd support you wait dear when you tour India, well India had atleast 30% support in all the games they played in Australia well what about you may be 0.3% well then we will see. and faris well dear Harbajan and Sreesanth might not be the greatest of bowlers still they were good enough to win and if not for the 13 player Mr Bucknoer for Australia you would have lost the series so just shutup and take it on the chin mate.and regarding Brian mate you guys cry about everything and then you want to play in IPL and regardin Symonds mate he got it back in the ODI couldnt score and was out to Bhaji twice in the finals HaHaHa so who had the last laugh and Jolly the interest is being counted mate you will get it back in October so all you Aussies grow up mate

Bhaji by Raj Sydney on 09 Mar 2008

I think its enough for Bhaji to get involove in the verbal game, better he plays the game. Bhaji is equally responsible for all disputes.

Bhajji's antics by sanjib das on 08 Mar 2008

Now, Bhaji should shut up, and concentrate on cricket. He as a bowler is declining, and with all the yougsters knocking on door, Bhajji should be in limelight for cricket.

Harbhajan and the team! by S Singh on 08 Mar 2008

Harbhajan and the Indian team have faced a lot of verbal abuse from the players, media and the spectators. The jubilant cry from him and the team at the end of the final match was not only one of elation but also of relief. So people like FARIS should be quiet and only say such things if they will be able to face it themselves.Congratulations to Team India! Shame on the critics of any sort!

deliberately creating controversies by faris on 08 Mar 2008

Harbajan is trying to increase his brand value by deliberately stoking up controversies and creating an image high spirited indian in the same way Shreeshant hasbeing doing since both of them are average bowlers. The BCCI should curb this tendency now otherwise it will lead to gross indiscipline

Aussie complaining. by JK on 08 Mar 2008

faris...you aussie are the liars and cheaters.you want BCCI to curb Bhajji. What do you want CA to do with the bully Hyden and Symonds..Hyden says all that and he was given shit warning..Now you aussie will get what you deserve. You guys were never playing fair game. rather you were always forcing others not to perform at their best and then you were winning. Now you have been given the same treatment. Reap the benefit of your own medicine. You do not have any right to complain.

Its never India's fault by Brian on 09 Mar 2008

We are still winners and winning, India won an insignificant ODI series, but only just, do not get to ahead of yourself Team India still has ALOT to prove, JK you call aussies liars and cheats its not Australia that has been caught ball tampering nor is it Australia that has had the most players charged under the rules of cricket ALL AROUND THE WORLD.

Prove? by Anurag on 10 Mar 2008

You are just whining now. Funny, that's what Aussie fans said about Indian fans at the start of the tour. As Mahatma Gandhi said: first they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win. Go India!

Aussies are Big Cry babies by NAT on 09 Mar 2008

Aussies were not caught ball tampering etc. but they were cowards, who did not walk when caught behind, and also claiming a floored catch, which enabled them win the Test series, else it would have been India 's win all the way.Come on Brian, the writing's on the wall. It's not India's insignificant ODI. Indians are T20/20 Champions. Why can't you give the devil its dues. You guys are big loosers on the field, so much so that you'll want to fight kids in the ring. Boo....

Whats the excuses going to be against South Africa? by Brian on 11 Mar 2008

20/20 champions thrashed by Australia, so the writing is on the wall for the 20/20 format of the game, as for walking we didn't see sachin tendulkar walk, nor did we see Australia try to have an umpire sacked because he won the first Final for India giving Clarke out, But lets put some perspective into Australia 'v' India on the cricket field....TESTS- 72 games played, Aust 34 wins, India 16 wins, Draws 21, Tied 1....ODI's - 96 games played, Aust 57 wins, India 32 wins, no-result 7.....20/20 - 3 games played, India 2 wins, Aust 1 win....So its looks like 20/20 is all you have but as the last game showed compared to Tests and ODI's Australia WILL over take that margin very soon, It looks to me like India are the big losers, India played very well in the ODI finals but they were not big wins so instead of getting carried away thinking you are world beaters I would look out for South Africa if i was India.

I think both teams learned a lesson! by Jolly on 08 Mar 2008

May be so. However the two blabber mouths have toned down a lot during the Aussie trip. They now realise that if you give shit with your own crowd support in India, you WILL get the same back with interest abroad. I think it is the lesson well learnt by both the teams!
