We never gave up demand for extradition: Pranab

New Delhi India wants the Mumbai attack planners to be extradited to India, Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee said on Friday, despite reports that New Delhi had no problems with their being tried in Pakistan.

"We have never given up the demand that the perpetrators of the terror act should be handed over to India," Mukherjee said.

"There is no question of that (giving up the extradition demand) or climb down."

Pranab was reported to have said this week in an interview with the ‘India Today’ media group that those accused in the Mumbai attacks could be tried and punished in Pakistan, a comment newspapers interpreted as a climbdown in New Delhi's demand for extradition of militants.

Mukherjee's ‘India Today’ interview came after Britain's Foreign Secretary David Miliband said the Pakistani state was not linked to the Mumbai attacks and he showed no support for India's demand for extradition of the accused.

"There is no question of that we have given up this demand," Mukherjee said in a televised statement on Friday. Tensions have flared between the nuclear-armed neighbours since the attacks, which India blamed on Pakistani militants backed by some official agencies there.

India went into diplomatic overdrive to gain support for its case after the November attacks that killed 179 people, but some of its Western allies such as the United States and Britain expressed doubts New Delhi had enough evidence to implicate the Pakistani state.

Besides demanding extradition of the accused, India also wants Pakistan to destroy the militant camps based across the border in PoK.

India has handed Pakistan data from satellite phones used by the attackers and what it describes as the confession of a surviving gunman, part of a dossier of evidence.

Pakistan has said the dossier did not amount to evidence and that the "information" needed to be carefully examined. India and Pakistan have fought three wars since 1947.

Extadition by uriK.P on 16 Jan 2009

This is the time for India and pakistan to sign extrdition treaty which may help to get these criminals back from both sides in future.Although,It is imperative on any nation to capture and extradite criminals to show the high moral ground of their nation but politics is a sick game. So,we have to rely on binding agreements.

India's "demands" by Hero Vaz on 16 Jan 2009

India's delayed and weak, in fact, gutless statements and responses have shown up India as a third rate country. Who is responsible for this? The politicians or the third rate Foreign Service officers who prepare the briefs for the politicians?

Who is the better Joker Pranab or Raj Narain by Anil Kohli on 16 Jan 2009

The Saas Bahu soap opera on TV are much better than the Congress/UPA fares. This is what will happen when we have a senile old men as Ministers. Congress has nobody in its ranks to replace this Joker. The government of India has tied itself up in so many knots that it unable to move in any direction. This is beyond their capabilities, simply because the Queen Bee of this Party has no experience what so ever, and is the guiding force for these slaves. It is frustrating to watch the country’s prestige and stature being lowered on a daily basis. We will have to suffer this until the new government is formed after the forthcoming election, hope we have learnt our lesson well and will ensure that this rag-tag combination does not form the next Government at the Centre.God Save India God Bless India.

Media Drama by Jayakar on 16 Jan 2009

The congress government is soft pedaling on the 26/11 issue and has surrendered itself fully to US and UK for their support. Its foolish to get a full hearted support from these two countries which have their own vested interests. The only strong voice we hear is from the Home MInister P.Chidambaram. Pranab Mukherjee proves time and again that he is good only in issuing strong words and retracting it later. Its high time India stops all bi-lateral relationships with Pakistan immediately. Its unfortunate that India has miserably failed to get world support on this incident . What we hear is just a media drama of Pranab Mukherjee
