Kolkata, January 5: Two days after Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee backed capitalist course for the state, veteran Communist leader Jyoti Basu declared that ‘socialism is not possible now’.

"We want capital, both foreign and domestic. After all we are working in a capitalist system. Socialism is not possible now," he said in response to a question after a meeting of the party's state secretariat.

"We had spoken about building up a classless society, but that was a long time ago," he said.

Basu supported Bhattacharjee's contention that industrialisaton in the state has to follow the capitalist course and wondered why this was being objected to by Left Front allies.

"Socialism is our political agenda and was mentioned in our party document, but capitalism will continue to be the compulsion for the future," Basu, a CPM politburo member, said.

Pointing out that CPM-led governments existed in only three states in India, he said, "Can we say we will establish socialism on the basis of this?"

He said, however, while inviting private and foreign capital for industries, the interests of workers also needed to be taken care of.

Earlier on Thursday, Bhattacherjee had strongly pitched for capitalism as the only way to industrialise the state.

Criticising allies like Forward Bloc and RSP which have accused the government of deviating from from Left ideology after being in power for over 30 years, Basu said he failed to understand their objections.

"Capitalists have a role too. We want capital. What is the objection to it and what is it for? I simply fail to understand it," he said.

COMMUNISTS IN INDIA by A S MURTY on 08 Jan 2008

The Left parties in India had never any ideology, the plank on which they are supposed to carry on their political work. They have never been on the "right" side of the situation and have therefore been "left" out in most parts of the country. The "Left" hand of the communists does not know what the "Right" hand is doing and they are only making fools of themselves. All their leaders have gone past their prime and hence this disenchantment from the hard realities. They survive on the anti-BJP platter and are today so measely as to be totally dependent on the Congress Party, of all the other combinations. Their so called "young brigade" too is 'left' out of ideas and they are seen trying their hands at solving problems across the borders while "Nandigram" is still boiling. Let charity begin at home. They had better realise the fact that their services are required for only trade union activity- lockouts, dharnas, strikes etc. and they had better leave the political thinking to the 'fight' thinking intelligentsia and the watchful media.

Green Back Salute! by K.C.C.Thampan. on 06 Jan 2008

If the veteren nonogenarian marxist say something it should be right! So if he says Cpitalism is Socialism(he may say so a few weeks later)it should be right. A true marxist can't go wrong; can do no wrong! He can call another politician a capitalist; and the word is a dirty one. When he wants capital(for the State!)and he calls on Capitalists and entreats them to invest in his State the word automatically wears an aura and bears a sweet smell! And those who fails to understand and to assimilate the sudden 'ulta' are fools, to use the mildest invective! Green Back Salute! Sterling Salute! Mark Salue!, Jyoti Da!

Bongal must invite East India Company for FDI like they did 250 years ago, and spread socialism all over comnunal Hindoosthan by Seclular Bamponthi J. Basu on 06 Jan 2008

Kudos to Bamponth for taking the lead in becoming the capitalisitic class. The money they have made by ruling in name of Commieism must be used as capital so that Bamponthis and their superior Leftist children become richer and more powerful and establish true seclularism under their dynasties for the uneducated masses and middle class of comnunal Hindoosthan. The same has happened in most advanced superpower of the world, the greatest democracy and commie nation of Chin. Even the same happened in Animal Farm when pigs became the ruling Marxist class of the farm. This is the inevitale course of History, and only by this method can statesmen like Budda, SOmnath, Karate, Achutiyanandan, Surjeet, Bhunda, et al. can bring enlightenment to proletariat, especially minroties, OBC, SC And ST. Under the governance of Chin and by selling land to East India Company, great Bamponthi statesmen can bring capitalistic investment to Bongal! CEnturies ago, East India Company brought foreign direct investment into SEZ's first time in Bongal, and established socialism there, and used the base to create communism in whold of comnunal Hindoosthan where minroties were being oppressed by upper cast comnunal HIndoos. IT is now the duty of BAsu, Budda, and other greate Bamponthi leaders of Bongal to establish the same utopia as Marx Mao and Lenin came and told them in their dreams.

Dont Go to Bengal by Singha on 06 Jan 2008

Dont Go to Bengal - It has become a state of hypocrites. Even by the standards of bengalee hypocrisy, this takes the cake.

Red salute to capitalism! Hurray by Dr. A. K. Biswas on 06 Jan 2008

Since 60s of the last century we have been watching the red brigade doing to West Bengal what Talibans did in Afganistan opposing everything modern, progressive and forward-looking. After long last, it seems, wisdom has dawned on them. Education for the masses has been destroyed. They are enemies of education to the people. The lowest strata has been the worst to suffer in the processs. They have pampered the upper castes in the name and under the cover of an ideology. The present government in W. Bengal has 16 Brahmin of 33 cabinet ministers, though they account for 3.5% population of the state. Not one tribal holds a cabinet rank as minister there! Only 5 ministers are Muslim with 23% population. Still many feel they apppease them.Everywhere one can see three castes---Brahmin, Kayasth and Baidya---in position of influence, affluence, gain and dominance. What comrades have been doing in Bengal in last 30 years, Mr. Narendra Modi is attempting that! He would do without raising dust if he takes lessons in Alimuddin Street, Kolkata. What else?

Untill now he screwed the people of WB by P.S. on 06 Jan 2008

This guy screwed WB all his life, served the Russian and Chinese and Muslims and now says socialism is not good. Who is responsible for the repression of the party members? He enjoyed the top position while partymembers shivered under inhumane commusinst regulations.

Jyothi Basu says "Days of Socialism over." Does he mean, the days of Communism is over?" by Hary Nambiar on 06 Jan 2008

Jyothi Basu, ever since the Communists began controlling politics in Kerala and West Bengal, you guys have systematically destroyed the industrial environment in these states. While sermoning proletariates of the world to unite, unite and be strong, you have motivated them to hate the providers of capital. People who worked hard, saved their hard earned income and helped capital formation have become the enemy of the proletariates. Communist movement has promoted irreligion and militancy among young people who have no other resource except their (physical health, which they are unwilling to use), The party has few leaders who know how the society works and what is economics. There was a time when your cohorts used to make midnight visits to people whom they considered "Rich," and to distribute their wealth to the common men. Your cohorts used to threaten public hearings against professionals like doctors to coerce them to provide free service to people. Your proletariates idle in workplaces and harrass their supervisors. Now you say the days of socialism is over and "Come Capitalism." Do you mean, the days of "Communism is over?" Are you planning to lower the red flags? What are your plans for your polit bureau and the rank and file communists? Are you planning to join Congress (Sonia). The axis of evil of Congress-Communist-Muslim League has been in de facto existence for a long time. You have your main enemy..........the communal Hindus. Know this, though, that capital leaves even before you ask it to leave, but does not come at your invitation.

Come on Bongs by BS on 06 Jan 2008

It is not a change of heart or not even a compulsion. The order has come from China. These commies came to power in the most industrialized state in India and moved it to below avrage(by per capita GDP) despite having a huge locational and relatively well-educated manpower.

Wisdom atlast! by V.K.Menon on 06 Jan 2008

Atlast Basu came out openly against socialism. It will be interesting to see what other leaders like Karat and Yechuri have to say. Militant attitude of left parties are over and it is time for the people of India to learn from this comment of Basu. The communist and so called left movements are not at all needed today. India can walk into more prosperity and stability once these curses are removed from the country. Let us hope next election will have proper answer to these leftists goons.

At last you have been enlightened, which is God send by DILIP /FRANCE on 06 Jan 2008

Communism/socialism,was and is a low grade, retrograde, discredited and a bogus idelogy, which lacked substance and authenticity. It was a perverse canard devised by cabal of gerryatrics, tyrants, despots, fasciists and bolsheviks, whose agenda was under the garb of Communism, was to take the ignorants, misinformed, gullible peasants for a ride,by promising them the Paradise,in the cloud cucooland. Finally this myth and fallacy has been exploded and this mystified discredited idelogy has been dubunked there is now no turning back. The road to prosperity, wealth and job creation,is one way, that is to impement market economy, induce FDI,enhanced productivity and Capitalism. This should be the sole Mantra, all other socialist hoopla has failed to uplift the poor and the wretched. In fact like all öther failed socialist states has accentuated greater and endemic poverty, including Communists much vaunted and boasted Agrarian revolution.,the frmers per capita income has regressed over the years, this is a FACT,therefore the time is of the oportune to change strategy and move on with Capitalist system, which will in the long run will lay the Golden Egg.Millions of poor West Bengalis will benefit. So now go ahead and industrialise as fast as possible and reform the system.

Jyoti Basu - the destroyer of Bengal by Bharat on 05 Jan 2008

Jyoti Basu has destroyed Bengal and Bengalis. What British and Mughal rule could not do for hundreds of years, he did it in 30 years. He is the messaaih to convert Bengal into an Islamist baston, allowing unchecked illegal Bangladeshi muslim infiltrations. Basu was the voice against Assam student movement, which was fighting to flush-out illegal Bangladeshi muslims from Assam. Today, about 25% of Bengals population are muslims, which was less than 10% at the time of partion 1947. Wake up Bengalis and save your state, else you will become like Kashmiri Hindus.
