Weak UAE dirham deterring Indian workers: Report

Dubai, March 8: Many Indian construction workers are choosing not to take jobs in Dubai because their earnings would be eroded by the UAE dirham's peg to the tumbling US dollar, Middle East Economic Digest (MEED) reported.

South Asian labour, mainly from India, is the backbone of the construction industry in Dubai, which is building palm-tree shaped islands and the world's tallest skyscraper in the $20 billion Burj Dubai development.

Indian construction workers would expect to earn four times as much as they would in India if they moved to Dubai five years ago, MEED cited Samir Khosla, Managing Director of Dynamic Staffing Services, as saying.

But as the US currency hits record lows against the euro and a basket of major currencies, the pay differential has been reduced to 40 per cent, Khosla said.

That has cut into the amount of money most of Dubai's expatriate workers can send home, and eroded the competitive advantage of working in the emirate.

"Most of the workers coming here to work in construction don't have any savings and just live from pay cheque to pay cheque," Khosla said, according to the weekly magazine.

"Even a small fall in the value of the dirham against the rupee is a problem for them."

Some 35,000 construction workers building the Burj Dubai development protested for 10 days in November over wages.

cost of living in dubai by blaze on 28 Aug 2008

cost of living in uae has gone too high that its good for indians to quit thinking of uae. the high rent, food prices, restricted rules and new policies increase the money spent in uae. the savings are negligible. its better 4 the educated 2 stay in india and start a career as now teh indian and uae salaries have no difference. In india we can earn more as teh cost of living is less. but in uae eventhough the conversion shows high salary, the savings are far less also you should not forget that we are sacrificing our good and happy family life to earn less. why now?? we had benefits b4, who already here r trapped, advice 4 youngsters who wish 2 come here.do not think uae will teach anything good for career.you have to give here wht you have learned.so the people who start career here are in trobule as india is far ahead in professionalism.. particularly in IT and engineering sector.if you hav juz a degree frm any local college and want earn more than india, come here pick up sales

Politicians are savages. Workers are men of honour pride of any country. by Anand Babu on 09 Mar 2008

Yeah, to some extend I agree with Raj babu. Before asking all Indians to return to Inda, we must make sure there is condusive climate for investments and becuase of that job opportunities for all the returnees. You still have parties with Christian affiliation and muslim affiliation making decisions as if they are secular. The corrupt congress and retarded communists making a mockery of development. Do you knw what will happen if all the overseas Indians return? It will be catastrophic. We will defenitly fight among ourself like what we see in Mumbai, Assam, Karnataka and many other palces. Better let them live with pride where ever they can. Do not be little these courageous paeople.
