New Delhi A group of Imams have appealed to Muslims to celebrate Bakrid in a sober way and wear black ribbons on their shoulders to show their grief and solidarity with Mumbaikars who faced one of the worst terror attacks in the country.

The All India Organisation of Imams of Mosques (AIOIM) also asked all Imams and Muftis to denounce terrorism and the brutal killing of Jews in Mumbai during this week's Friday prayers.

All mosques, religious scholars and madarsas should ‘announce in the Friday prayers this week that they are against any type of terrorism and deeply aggrieved by the loss of human lives especially the brutal killing of Jews,’ AIOIM President Hazrat Moulana Jameel Ahmed Ilyasi said in a statement.

Asking Indians to think above caste, class, religion and region, Ilyasi appealed to Indian Muslims to celebrate Eid-ul-Azha (Bakrid) on December 9 in a ‘very simple way’ and show their grief and solidarity to the Mumbai terror victims by wearing ‘black ribbons on their shoulders’.

"Although the Government is taking its initiatives to fight terrorism, we urge the nationalist people to unite and show solidarity in fighting terrorism," Illyasi said.

Certificates for patriotism? by Jayadevan on 07 Dec 2008

The Muslims do not need to declare anything as Muslims. They are full-fledged citizens of this country and do not need to give an explanation to anyone. Did we ask for such declarations from the Hindus after the 1984 riots or the Babri Masjid demolition? Would we like to have them proclaim that they are patriots too? If, as citizens of India, a group protests any atrocity, that is their fundamental right. If an Indian, also Muslim. is a terrorist and he turns against his own people, he is a traitor.. we have no dearth of them in India, starting from Jaichand and Mir Jafar. What connection do the Hindus who took bribes and facilitated the RDX landings have with me that I should feel sorry for them being Hindus? And if we remember the treason of great Hindu kingdoms in 1857, and the collaborationist stance of the Hindu Mahasabha, does that make Hindus traitors? Or even the ULFA and the LTTE? Like it or not, we are all in this boat together and there is no space to point a finger.

Symbol vs. Substance by bzbody on 03 Dec 2008

It is good to see symbolic gestures like black armbands etc. But what is really needed is a genuine commitment to cooperate with law-enforcement and investigative agencies, without politicizing the process or turning it into an ego battle.

Terrorist acts don't enjoy support India by Anand on 03 Dec 2008

It’s a wonderful gesture from Indian Muslim community. First, Indian Muslim community refused to have these terrorist bodies buried in India and now, they are going to wear black ribbon during the upcoming festivals to protest the terrorist acts committed on Mumbaikars. This is just beginning and the nefarious terrorists acts committed by these Islamic terrorists from abroad will soon be put to an end. As these acts will put common man from Muslim community in India at risk for no fault of theirs. Condemning such acts and disowning such people will get them great respect and remove any ill feelings against the community and will help in building good relations with majority Hindus. I request Muslim community to be more vigilant and identify black sheep if any and alert law enforcement agencies of such people/acts as we don’t want any more of such things happening in peace loving country.

Wearing black ribbons is not enough! by Malini Saxena on 03 Dec 2008

wearing black ribbons on Eid is fine but how about issuing a fatwa against all terrorists and their financiers.Muslims clerics have issued fatwas against Salman Rushdie, Danish cartoonists. I have not heard or read, watched any Islamic countries like Saudi Arabia, UAE, Malaysia or Bangla Desh condemn the terrorists organizations for committing such horrific crimes. Pakistan is trying to get out of this hole they have dug for themselves.Madlyne Allbright(US former secretary of state) stated Pakistan has become an international migraine on CNN. She is right. Pakistan should be held accountable for billion dollars aid they have received from USA. It should be declared a terrorist nation by UN if they don't take strong action against Lashkae-E_Taiba operatives and turn over Dawood Ibrahim and others to Indian govt.

India is great by Rohan on 03 Dec 2008

Extremely important that Indian Muslim leaders show the world that they strongly stand against Pakistan. Really a great gesture by Hazrat Moulana Jameel Ahmed Ilyasi. Wish the country had more people like him

Celebrate Ide soberly by padmesh kumar varma. on 03 Dec 2008

Dear Sir, It is a very welcome appeal. Other communities of india must also reciprocate and as advised by Janab Ilyasi they too must think above caste, class, religion and region. This is the need of the time. Hats off to Janab Ilyasi.

'Wear black ribbons ... by K. Raghavan on 03 Dec 2008

Note the Imams have not condemned the terrorist attack; they have only condoled death of victimsIf the Imams are serious to prove their anti terrorism credentials, they should ask all Imams to issue Fatwa to all muslims not to suport any terrorists, give safe heaen to then, fund them and call fo muslims to report to police about any of their neighours or family indulging in or plannig terrorist activity. Without local support foreign terrorists will be totally ineffective.

UNITED WE STAND by asnjay on 03 Dec 2008

Growing up in bombay during my school days and college days I had muslim friends, sikh friends, christian friends, jain friends and hindu friends. They also came from different states. I never thought even once that they belong to a different religion then mine. I always felt they were my brothers. However, post 9/11 the media has been branding the rouge elements as Muslim terrorists or hindu terrorists etc.. Why do the media have to attach religion to a terrorists. Terrorism is a crime and terrorist is a criminal. When you label them as Hindu terrorist or Muslim terrorist you are defiling the entire community instead of the person who committed the crime. MEDIA has to be very careful in their conduct and the way they put their news together. One of my best friends were muslims and it hurts me when the media defames their religion. Media can be a force in uniting all Indians together like we did to gain our independence from the Britishers.

Cartoon versus terror by Natarajan on 03 Dec 2008

The terrorists have defaced Islam worse than the Danish cartoonist. Wearing a black ribbon is the least that the muslims can do. Their action will say clearly, what they take more offence too - a silly cartoon or the worst terror in Mumbai.

Bahut achha khayal hain. by Vinayak Behere on 03 Dec 2008

Yes people from all walks of life have died. Bahut hi nek khayal hain.

Perish Terrorism by Prakash Lekshmaan on 03 Dec 2008

Good and more by Nation on 03 Dec 2008

This is a good gesture. We need more statements like these coming out from religious heads as this will create awareness among the youths are more easily exploited by ISI elements and their likes....

Celebrate Eid Soberly - Imams by ramesh kumar on 03 Dec 2008

Looks like we see light at the end of the tunnel. Fantastic if the Imams sticks to what they said, and the muslim brothers are ready to follow this appeal. Wish all Indians - be it hindus, muslims, christians, sikhs or whatever, consider all are indians, and all the best of luck!

Terrorism by Dr K.D.Gupta on 03 Dec 2008

I appreciate and welcome the message of AIOIM President Moulana Hazrat Jameel Illyasi to the people of India to join hands to fight terrorism The terrorist attack on 26th November 2008 in Mumbai killed about 200 people destroyed assests worth several crores, wiped out means of livelihood of many.People killed were innocent, helpless and belonged to all faith and region. Now is the time we Indian should join hands and contribute our might to fight terrorism and remove the menace of barbaric act of killing innocent people .

A very touching gesture indeed by S.M.Singru on 03 Dec 2008

I felt touched by this gesture of solidarity. I salute these religious leaders for this sensitiveness. With Hindu-Moslem unity in India, no power on earth can harm us.

Indian muslims by Naveed on 03 Dec 2008

Welcome move. Indian muslims have always kept away themselves from terrorism. The reason for this is that we Indian muslims have understood the meaning of Islam in real terms. Brotherhood, love for the country, respecting other religions are the basic fundamentals of Islam, which unfortunately other muslims failed to understand. Hats-off to these imams and I hope they would continue to deliver the same message in their Friday sermons to create brotherhood among all Indians. It is also heartening to read so many non-muslims appreciating the getures shown by the imams. It is sad that the media mentioned that 40 muslims were among those who were killed by the terrorists. Please don't mention the martyrs by their religion. God bless our country.

Hope by ajay on 03 Dec 2008

Hope many more imams will make such apeals, and denounce voilence, whomever against it is. That will go a long way in bringing trust and unity among the citizens of India.

Wear Black Ribbions but celebrate by Shiva Gopalakrishnan on 03 Dec 2008

Wear the Black Ribbon a very nice gesture. Bakrid is a very important festival. Go ahead celebrate with pomp. A bunch of terror attacks should not be the reason to tone down. Terror has no religion, race, face or country. No one toned down Diwali celebrations after the attack in Delhi

why celebrate? by Ani on 03 Dec 2008

Dear Shiva,It is stupid of you to say "go ahead and clelebrate with Pomp". It is the need of the hour for muslims to stand up and say they are NOT with the terrorist. Celebrating now for any reason, looks like you are happy and tacitly support the terrorists.

Every one appreciates this Eid Gesture by Kumar on 03 Dec 2008

Thank you fellow citizens. These dear Indian Muslims have shown the world they are for peace.I hope more and more moderate Muslims from around the world including those from Pakistan will come forward and denounce terrorism/

Media should appeal all religion people should come together on bakrid by Sanjeev on 03 Dec 2008

This is really great. All relifgion people should come together on Bakrid to show the soliderity across the nation... I would appeal to Media to take this initiative so that more and more people can come together.

Good, but only a first step. A lot needs to be done by Sharfudeen on 03 Dec 2008

This is only a small first step. As an Indian muslim, I would like to see more actions by the Indian muslim community in voicing against terrorism in any form.More than just voicing out, we should also act and help the country and the law enforcing agencies in combating any element within us who would be involved in terrorism.

Wish all were like you by bharatiya on 03 Dec 2008

I wish all muslims in India were of this kind of thinking.

they are by Hamed on 03 Dec 2008

They are. Who are not cannot call themselves followers of Islam anymore.

most are actually NOT. by Ani on 03 Dec 2008

Sorry to dash your dreams, but most of them are tacitly supporting the terrorists. For most muslims, religion comes above anything. Even the land and people who tolerate them.

Good Decision by Ashiq Rahman on 03 Dec 2008

Yes, inspirative decison. Such steps will unite us more and more. And it is punishment of terrorist who game in the name of Islam. We muslims in all over the india should follow this FATWA. Thank you Imams.

We are united by Ajith on 03 Dec 2008
