New Delhi A group of Imams have appealed to Muslims to celebrate Bakrid in a sober way and wear black ribbons on their shoulders to show their grief and solidarity with Mumbaikars who faced one of the worst terror attacks in the country.

The All India Organisation of Imams of Mosques (AIOIM) also asked all Imams and Muftis to denounce terrorism and the brutal killing of Jews in Mumbai during this week's Friday prayers.

All mosques, religious scholars and madarsas should ‘announce in the Friday prayers this week that they are against any type of terrorism and deeply aggrieved by the loss of human lives especially the brutal killing of Jews,’ AIOIM President Hazrat Moulana Jameel Ahmed Ilyasi said in a statement.

Asking Indians to think above caste, class, religion and region, Ilyasi appealed to Indian Muslims to celebrate Eid-ul-Azha (Bakrid) on December 9 in a ‘very simple way’ and show their grief and solidarity to the Mumbai terror victims by wearing ‘black ribbons on their shoulders’.

"Although the Government is taking its initiatives to fight terrorism, we urge the nationalist people to unite and show solidarity in fighting terrorism," Illyasi said.

Good decsion by Ali on 03 Dec 2008

Hats off to the clergy. We do not celebrate festivals when there is death in our family. Today many people from the Indian family have lost thier lives. I request all that we keep the festival as sober as possible.

Correction by gullz on 03 Dec 2008

I would appreciate if we stick to the Word Indians rather than Mumbaikars. we are a nation not a state. so please replace word Mumbaikars to Indians in your future articles. whole of nation has suffered the terror attack. we should support the nation rather than a state.

Well Said for a United India by Michael Pereira on 03 Dec 2008

Well said. This is what is most needed to make a United India rather than only having a Jai Maharashtra. We humans are the one differentiating between religion caste, But if we think commonly as a United India. We can assure that all will leave in harmony, peace, happiness and laughter. Rather than seeing these brutal attacks from invaders who than have a hearty laugh.

Great Steps by M. Y. Imran on 03 Dec 2008

This is really a very good step. Islam is a peaceful religion and preaches peace and tolerance. Being a Muslim, I strongly condemn brutal attacks by the terrorist and I want concrete step with full force and power.Further, we will definitely celebrate Eid Al Adha sobrely with black ribbon on our shoulders in order show our solidarity with fellow countrymen. We all community members regarldess of our cast, creed and religion must UNITE and make India more stronger.I love my country. Jai Hind!

Welcome move by Rakesh on 03 Dec 2008

That's a very thoughtful move from the Muslim clergy. Let this be a beginning in denoucning terrorism and killing of innocents in the name of religion, caste, creed, colour, or nationality. We need more such gestures from the Muslim intelligensia and clergy so that the commoners stand up and speak against terrorism.

Good by Subhash Bhatt on 03 Dec 2008

This is a good gesture from AIOIM and must be welcomed. Such moderate Muslims must come forward and make themselves heard so that their voice does not get drowned amidst the loud, violent minority within their community. This is from an RSS supporter, mind you.

Positive step by Abhijit on 03 Dec 2008

I'am very pleased at this announcement. I was anxiusly waiting for the Muslim community to denounce the attacks

Celebrating Eid by RAJIB SENGUPTA on 03 Dec 2008

It is indeed heart warming to see such statements from muslim relegious leaders. It is time that all of us unite and stand strong irrespective of our caste and religion. The event has proved the terror does not have any religion, almost 40 muslims have been brutally killed by the same people who seems to be killing innocents for a muslim cause! Need of the hour is that all muslim leaders and intellectruals should unite and stand collectively to encourage and guide their community members to stand unitedly with all other Indians and be proud for their nationality. Thanks a lot to Mr Illyasi for his initiative.

Good step by R on 03 Dec 2008

This is a very welcome step which shows the sensitivity of the Imams towards the collective horror India faced. Such voices of Muslim opinion are to be congratulated and supported by all political hues. It is people like these who will be an important element in countering the hate that drives some of their co-religionists.
