Pune With severe cold wave conditions prevailing in Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, UP, MP, Gujarat, Maharashtra and West Bengal, almost the entire country recorded low minimum temperatures on Thursday.

Severe cold wave conditions over west, northwest and central India saw the minimum temperature go below normal by 4-8 degrees C on Thursday. “This frequent cold wave condition experienced by the country this year definitely makes it among the coldest winters in the past years,’’ said IMD Director General Ajit Tyagi.

The Met department said that these conditions will continue till February 15.

Minimum temperatures fell by 3-8 degrees C over eastern UP, eastern MP, north Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra, and by 3-5 degrees C over Haryana, Delhi, Punjab, western UP, western MP, Rajasthan and Gujarat.

Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 4 degrees C. While Pune shivered at 4.6 degrees C, it was the coldest day of the season in Mumbai, with a minimum temperature of 8.8 degrees C.

Severe winds coming from the northern hemisphere with winter storms in Europe and the US have also caused a spell of cold wave. Active north-western disturbance and winds from the Atlantic, Europe and Mediterranean are causing cold wave conditions in north India. Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology Director B N Goswami attributes it also to the La Nina effect.
