Weekend classes for women corporators, at scenic Karla

Mumbai, February 12 This weekend, women corporators of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation will enjoy a special getaway from Mumbai with a special training programme being organised for them at scenic Karla, a hill-station en route to Lonavala. The two-day junket, which will cost the civic exchequer approximately Rs 3 lakh, is being organised with the objective of “personality development and capacity building” for the women corporators. Pulling out all stops, the civic administration has booked the entire Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation resort at Karla, a lush estate of pretty cottages stationed a stone’s throw from a seasonal river.

A brainchild of Mayor Shubha Raul, the programme had venue selected earlier was Srivardhan, a coastal holiday spot in Raigad. “It was also to have been sponsored by the All India Institute for Local Self Government,” said an official.

The BMC has booked the MTDC resort for an overnight stay for 89 women corporators. So far, 74 corporators have enrolled.

“The camp is especially being conducted for women corporators so that they will not feel conscious and feel free to raise their queries in the absence of male company,” the official added. The two-day camp will focus on administrative working patterns; will guide the women corporators on the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act of 1888, its key provisions and how it can be used; the budget and how corporators can best use their corporator funds, among other things.

Municipal Commissioner Jairaj Phatak, Additional Municipal Commissioner Manu Kumar Srivastava, Joint Municipal Commissioner (Improvements) V Radha and Municipal Secretary Mridul Joshi will be guiding the corporators at the training sessions.

A special addition: Senior and former women corporators who will narrate anecdotes and lessons they learnt during their tenure as corporators.
