Kolkata, March 20 Not happy with proceedings in their case in the Calcutta High Court, Rizwanur Rehman’s family is likely to approach the Supreme Court and demand justice for him.

This was announced by Rizwanur’s brother Rukbanur Rehman at a rally organised by Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee to express solidarity with the family on Thursday. The rally began at Rizwanur’s home in Tiljala and ended at Park Circus Maidan. Kishwar Jehan, Rizwanur’s mother, also participated.

“Justice delayed is justice denied. Rizwanur died in September. Seven months on, the Todis are not behind bars. To protest this injustice we will block bridge no 4 at Park Circus Maidan on March 28,” said the Trinamool chief. This is Banerjee’s second visit to the family in a fortnight. The Trinamool’s new political partner, SUCI, also participated in today’s rally.

Banerjee lambasted Advocate General Bolai Roy for asking the Calcutta High Court to dismiss the petition filed by Rizwanur’s family. “We are not happy with the proceedings in court. We strongly criticise the steps taken by Bolai Roy. He is negating the report submitted by the CBI,” said Rukbanur.

They also demanded the arrest of Gyanwant Singh, the “main culprit” in Rizwanur’s death. “We want the High Court to punish Singh. He made my brother’s life unbearable. But he was spared in the CBI report,” said Rukbanur.

Rizwanur’s family believes the state and the police have joined hands to save the Todis and the tainted police officers. “The Todis are responsible for my brother’s death. Even if Rizwanur committed suicide, the Todis should be punished,” Rukbanur said.

The CBI report was placed in court on January 8, earlier this year. Negating the murder theory, the report stated that Rizwanur had committed suicide. Three police officers were charged with abetment of suicide. Not satisfied with the report, the family stressed that the High Court should not initiate action based on it alone.
