Washington, January 25: The Bush administration is ready to send a small contingent of US troops into Pakistan to fight the insurgency if Islamabad asks for assistance, Defence Secretary Robert Gates has said.

"We remain ready, willing and able to assist the Pakistanis and to partner with them to provide additional training, to conduct joint operations, should they desire to do so," Gates, flanked by Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen, said at a news conference.

The top Pentagon official said Pakistan has not requested any additional assistance as it battles an increasingly active insurgency, adding the US will respect the Musharraf government's decision on how to tackle the problem.

"We're not aware of any proposals that the Pakistanis have made to us at this point. At this point it's their nickel, and we await proposals or suggestions from them," the Defence Secretary said.

"I think that the emergence of this fairly considerable security challenge in Pakistan has really been brought home to the Pakistani government relatively recently and particularly with the tragic assassination of Mrs. Bhutto. So I think it's not particularly surprising that they have not fully thought through exactly how they intend to proceed and their strategy going forward. I expect that that will happen," Gates added.

The top US commander in the region, Admiral William Fallon, was in Pakistan this week meeting with senior Pakistani officials, including the new army chief Gen Ashfaq Kayani. Admiral Fallon had said that Pakistani officials were now more willing to seek US assistance.

US presence in Pakistan is very important to prevent nukes falling into terrorist's hands. The only problem is, if Pakistan becomes calm, ISI put all resources to disturb India using their network on Indian soil !! by KMR Overseas on 25 Jan 2008

Pakistan almost a divided nation and verge of collapse. North-west Frontier province and federally administered areas are out of government/army control since decades. Balochistan would have declared independence by now if the leader Akbar Shahbaz Khan Bugti not assassinated by army in 2006. POK looking for independence or might eager join India for better future. It is better Americans get in there.Fact: US (undeclared)presence and billions of dollars as aid is keeping Pakistan afloat.

PAKISTAN by G.Alagarsamy on 25 Jan 2008

It is better for U.S to send its troops to inside pakistan to wipe out terrorists.Bin laden, alquida and taliban terrorists are enjoying full support of pakistan. There is no doubt in it.Eventhough western countries know it,they are unable to take necessary actions.U.S should take control of pakistan's atomic bombs immediately.

Pakistan to ask US Troops---- by romesh.sharma on 25 Jan 2008

How foolish the Defence Secretary Gates can be by saying that theUS administration was ready to send troops in Pakistan if Islamabad asks/requests!Pakistan will never ask or request US for any direct intervention within its territory and if atall such situationarises Pakistan will never leak out to save its face. The US may force its way in troubled areas only with suppressive and black-mailing tricks e.i. refusing any further financial aid/help and refuse to sell any weapons to Pak.The conditions Pakistan is going through is nothing new to the regime and citizens of Pakistan and they know how to live such uncertainties and difficulties. It has become part of their culture and religion.Perhaps yes,Pakistan will ask not US contigents/troops but modern weapons and relating military equipment which US will never deny.Naturall stock-piling against India and not to fight the socalled Insurgents. On the other hand the USAmericans do wish that Musharraf should ask for such help to show the world how important they are.
