We've arrested more than 100 people: Pak

Islamabad Pakistan has arrested more than 100 people in a crackdown on groups allegedly linked to the Mumbai attacks, but that information India has handed over still needs work before it can be used as evidence in court, a top official said Thursday.

Despite the announcement, Interior Ministry chief Rehman Malik dodged a question on whether Pakistan was conceding the plot that killed 164 people in India's commercial capital was hatched on his country's soil.

India says Pakistan-based militant group, Lashkar-e-Taiba, masterminded the November attack. In the days afterward, the UN Security Council declared that Jamaat-ud-Dawa, a charity in Pakistan, was merely a front for the outlawed militant organization.

In a press conference, Malik said 124 people had been arrested, while authorities had taken steps against 20 offices, 87 schools, two libraries, seven religious schools, and a handful of other organizations and Web sites linked to the charity.

He also said authorities had shut several relief camps of the charity, some of which have been alleged to be militant training grounds. It was unclear exactly how many people remained in Pakistani custody, however, and Malik at one point indicated many may simply be under surveillance now.

Among those who are being held, including under house arrest, are Hafiz Mohammed Saeed, the head of the charity who helped establish the militant group, which was banned in 2002. Also in custody are Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi and Zarrar Shah, two men India alleges planned the Mumbai attacks.

Malik said Pakistan was trying to act responsibly and went after the charity and those linked to it because of the UN declaration. Malik repeated Pakistani calls for a joint investigation into the attack.

We will not give them capital punishment..itna dum hamari sarkar mein nahi hai..but we will provide them food and shelter.Jai Hind.

All of you indians,we had enough of ur monging, pak has been offering joint investigation since the very 1st day of that ugly incident. but at the same look at the attitue of you guys??? even Milliband said pak is not involved, but for some reason 90% of indian want war, having known pak abilities and ground facts? what good is gonna bring? even if we do go to war? both countries will use arms..and the turn to west for more and more...who is winning in this all? india, pak, terrorists or THE WEST? lets sort the issues who are causing all this? why dont we sort kashmir, palestine etc. and one thing i want to tell india is that if they ever make the mistake to attack pak, that would be the disastrous day of the sub continet history...its war not a game, lets come back to sense and try to sort it out. use ur brains not balls

Dont be stupid!! by Rajan Sharma on 15 Jan 2009

Who the hell has the control and capacity to arrest the real rulers of Pakistan? Be careful Rehman, keep supporting your masters, otherwise they will not take seconds to crush a mouse like you. Dont be stupid to give the stupid statements. You are fooling none, but yourself. Keep watching how your own creation kills your socalled terrorist state, but you deserve it.

evidence to pak by JS on 15 Jan 2009

Why is it that india is not accepting for joint investigation. All this while India has just been dilly dallying with the identification of Kasab first and then with the evidence Pakistan is asking for. Is there something to hide that India is not in favour of joint investigation. As it is there are lot of loose ends and questions to be answered relating the the death of Karkare and his colleagues and the identification of the terrorist. If India is clean then we should furnish all the evidences to Pakistan and ask them to act on it stongly against the perpetrators if they from their soil.

Why not? by rajnish on 15 Jan 2009

JS, Many in Pak tend to believe, just like you, in a major conspiracy theory behind Karkare's death. What they dont realize that facts do not support this theory at all. Have you heard Karkare's own wife, who has been very vocal otherwise mind you, allude to any such conspiracy? So don't get Quixotic and start fighting the windmills! As far as joint probe is concerned, let me assure you that given the kind of credibility Pak has, most of us feel its like asking Osama to investigate 9/11. Pakistan and its people are in a state of denial which will not help the 2 countries build close relationship - unfortunate but increasingly true.

Ans to Why by Tejasvi on 15 Jan 2009

Pakistan is not a trust able partner at all.The leadership in Pak has breached the trust not once but many times in the past by supporting the terrorists against India. That is why?.

This is not the answer to why by JS on 15 Jan 2009

This is not the valid reason for not allowing joint investigation. If we know that Pakistan is not trustworthy then why are we giving only informations and not evidences. With joint investigation the truth will come out and we will be able to establish then and there whether pakistan is responsible or there is an inside hand.

David Miilband by Dr. Ash Sood on 15 Jan 2009

The strange kind of support the UK minister offer, he feels the 'Law of Pak'should deal with the henious crime of terrorism in Mumbai and these cowards are not handed over to India for a trial.I don't know how it fits in with him if similar acts in UK present and past.Would he be happy for trial in Pakistan of the accused mostly with links to /dual citizens of Pak involved in 7/7 or related atrocities.I am sure he will like to try them in UK or as US chasing some of them for trial in US. I hope these politicians start seeing these acts as Universal and treated with similar disdain whether its US, UK or India. I wish he is asked this question in his next 'meet the press' session.

David Miilband is hand in gloves with Pakis, it is a muxlim Xtian conspiracy of evil by U N S Ecular on 15 Jan 2009

Muxlim and Xtians are always friends against what they consider are not the people of the book- Xtians call them pagans, and muxlims kafirs. David Miilband is hand in glove with ISI and Al Qaeda in their war against Hindus, and should not be trusted; neither should their agents in India namely Sonia Raul Priyanka.
