New Delhi Caught in the throes of a vigorous debate after the party’s debacle in the recent general election, senior BJP leader L K Advani, in an apparent reference to the intra-party feud, on Monday cautioned against the growing trend of “every second leader in the party willing to hold forth on virtually everything to see their name in print and face on television”.

“Hamare yahan pravakta bahut ho gaye hain. Keval akhbar mein naam dekhne ke liye aur television mein chehra dekhne ke liye aatur rehte hain (We are having too many spokespersons in the party these days. They want to see their names in print and see their faces on television),” said Advani, speaking on the birth anniversary of Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder Syama Prasad Mookerjee.

“They (this new breed of leaders, who are ever willing to hold forth as 24/ 7 spokespersons) don’t realise or understand the values that Syama Prasad Mookerjee, Deendayal Upadhyaya and Atal Bihari Vajpayee stood for, and the sacrifices that they made for the ideology and the party,” said the senior BJP leader.

A large number of BJP leaders have held forth on reasons for the party’s election defeat, in the media, in the recent weeks, while other leaders have written to the party leadership on the party’s defeat, some of which found their way into the media.

With the BJP at the crossroads, and two competing strands of thought, broadly understood in terms of Hindutva and moderates in the party, Advani also cited Mookerjee’s life and times to stress the need for “alliance building”. “Mookerjee once said that he would have changed the country if he had four or five Deendayal Upadhyayas. He was also acutely aware of the need to end the hegemony of the Congress, a reason why he floated a 21-member anti-Congress alliance, called National Democratic Front, way back in 1952. Our own alliance — National Democratic Alliance — formed under the leadership of Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 1998 was named after it,” said Advani.

Citing the examples of Mookerjee and Communist Party of India’s Hiren Mukherjee, who Advani said were the two best parliamentarians in the first Lok Sabha, the senior BJP leader said “today’s leaders perhaps didn’t believe in studying after joining politics”.

Crediting Mookerjee with ensuring the positive changes in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, Advani, however, asked the party cadre not to lose heart after the recent defeat. “We have 116 members in Lok Sabha with 58 first timers; 47 members in Rajya Sabha; and state governments in eight states. Our defeat then was not that big. We had, after all, only two members in the Lok Sabha in ‘84,” said Advani.

Advani by Avinash on 07 Jul 2009

It's a big joke that LKA talks about the values of SP Mukherjee, ABV etc. I think first of all LKA himself has not understood those values, otherwise he would not be running after the PM's chair and hurling (childish) abuses on the personality of MMS, that itself shows that he belongs to what catagory and what kind of values he practices.

Advani is right ! by DR.KANDHAHAR CHOR MAAKI LOUDA on 07 Jul 2009

He may be right. There appears to be a competition in every party, except perhaps CPM.

Dear Advaniji, please drown yourself and your party in chullu bhar paani by DR.KANDAHAR CHOR on 07 Jul 2009

Dear Advaniji, please drown yourself and your party in chullu bhar paani because your kaali kartuts have reached new heights.

Where were you at time of elections ? by Upendra Watwe on 07 Jul 2009

Looks you were campaigning for some other party while living safely in a BJP stronghold, thats why you want the leader to drown himself and the party.

Spokes Persons by Veer Sain on 07 Jul 2009

Advaniji is right and he himself belongs to that category. His disgracefull utterances against the PM had costed BJP votes. He will be better off keeping mum for some time and do some introspection. And to Vajpayee fans, find a life beyond Vajpayee and move on.

Let us Admit, Advani is not a leader with Mass apeal by John on 07 Jul 2009

Advani cannot be compared to the leaders with enormous mass appeal like Vajpayee or Mahajan. Inability to project a leader who is acceptable to the majority lot is also a failure from BJP's side. Advaniji may be a very good leader, but BJP need a more common face similar ti that of Vajpayee or Mahajan, if they are to win mass appeal again.

BJP by NIRANJAN on 07 Jul 2009

ITS TOO BAD THAT BJP CAN HANDLE NEITHER BEING IN POWER NOR OUT OF POWER!

malpractices in elections by ysm on 07 Jul 2009

what about the gains in uttrakhand, punjab, gujrat, west bengal,up etc where congress is not in power and EVMS were used.what about 2004 and 1999 when bjp was in power.

Too many spokesperson in BJP by Luv Kumar Shinghal on 07 Jul 2009

I agree with Shri L K Advani and hope the messag is given to the leaders

spokeperson! by swaminathan on 07 Jul 2009

BJP's presence to be increased in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra and W.B.They shuld not target a community but target the party which pleases them. Tell the other community how the party bias the minorities for vote and others are deprived. Once the majority understands BJP acan sweep the votes which they want.II grade laders are to wait. Let rajnath. yaswant know south of vindhya no boby knows them.

@romesh.sharma think that they are doing us Hindus a favour, but on the contrary he is blotting our Hindu image all around the world.... by DR.SANGH CHOR on 07 Jul 2009

romesh.sharma is himself a fool, because he is scorning the entire country for casting their vote to the Congress. The guy seems to be a runaway patient from the agra pagalhana.BJP lost because of his given comments, because people found out how pathatic these BJP leaders and followers were. They mix our Hinduism with their very dirty politics and no one is willing to by this cheap product.

BJP Leadership by Ash on 07 Jul 2009

My dear Advani There are bad Captains and not bad Soldiers. You are the one bad captain. Now you are comparing yourself with top leaders like Atal ji, Sayama ji and Deendayal ji, first deserve then desire. BJP could have won the last parliamentary election easily, since you had no programme for the country, discipline or your leadership in the party which resulted in failure. In the last days of elections you were frustrated that you were speaking all unt shunt like black money and others things. In old days there was not much excess to media to others. The best thing is you resign honourably give chance to deserving leader like ex FM Jaswant Sinha. Now every thing is very calculative and systematic may be every day life or elections. One has to have a scientific smarter leadership and approach. Gone are the days when people did not had the ability to understand politics. Now with education and media people understand every thing.

BJP by Anil on 07 Jul 2009

Mrs Thatcher was expected to sweep into power with an increased majority the second time in the 1980s in Britain. Her Foreign Secretary said that he hoped that the majority for the Conservative party would not be too big, as huge majorities leads to arrogance and being out of touch. She did come to power with a thumping majority, sacked the foreign secretary and went onto govern. She did stop listening, riots occurred in Britain over "poll tax" and was later removed by her own party. The problem in India is that nobody within Congress has the guts to do what the Conservatives did. Congess has too many sychophants and yes men/women too eager to please at any cost. A strong opposition in India is absolutely critical, unless Indians want one family rule perpetuatued into infinity.

too many by swaminathan on 07 Jul 2009

Wait for awhile.Want will happen in few days. There are going to be many blunders and people will want this old man only as pm. every one becomes older by a day tommorrow. no body should forget this while commenting on his age. in every party people will be there to grab. bjp no exception with yaswant, rajnath etc.

I am hilarious on that guy... by Jem Hassan on 07 Jul 2009

This guy, Mr.Romesh Sharma has no sharam at all to say that who voted for Congress are fools..means majority of Indians are fools...only the people who voted for anti-national Sanghis are true nationals and intelligent..on what base he says those things?...India has only 15% Muslims...majority are Hindus and he is insulting them by calling fools...who is dividing the nation?..the RSS which never fought for our freedom or the Muslims who fought and shed their blood for our nation's freedom?..who is fool?..Advani who said Jinnah was secular or us who believe Jinnah was seperatist?..

Advani go home by Upadhyay on 07 Jul 2009

Advaniji ghar jao anil, romesh.sharma

We've too many spokespersons these days, says Advani by darvan on 07 Jul 2009

Too right.Too many cooks spoil the broth.Especially a broth concocted on values no Indian wants. 'Unity, peace and brotherhood' of Indians is the battle-cry for today, join the chorus or become extinct BJP style-disillusioned,disoriented,disunited.Forget the past ,today the world is facing worse economic downturn ever,BJP would fail to reverse. So grow up.BJP, childish infighting would backfire on you and turn into a Dinosaur of 2005. You played your Hidutva card and lost same as Lalu prasad lost his Dalit platform.

Minimum campaign by Ram on 07 Jul 2009

For the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections (2011 or earlier after the EVM fraud gets exposed), BJP can do a simple campaign. The people are already looking for a change and Navin Chawla would be out of office by that time and I am sure India will vote for it's own party, the BJP. The NDA rule was only a small example of BJP's governance, but a BJP rule of India would match Dr.Abdul Kalam's dream.

BJP's demise? by Anil on 07 Jul 2009

A democracy needs a strong opposition to thrive and get strong. Those who hope for BJP's demise, please note that one party rule is a dictatorship, where anything goes. Absolue power leads to absolute corruption. BJP needs to find direction, unity and purpose again, for the sake of a stronger and better India. Jai Hind.

After the Babri report Advani the liar could be sent to jail by DR.KANDAHAR CHOR on 07 Jul 2009

BJP is party with difference. by infin on 07 Jul 2009

They are the only ones who can reign economy. Infact, during their rule the economy really changed. They are courageous and can bring huge reforms. Look at their manifesto, it tells what huge difference between BJP and Congress. Pity, 25% of india population (minority), block voting stopped them from coming. majority has to understand where and how they want to live.whether they come out and vote so that people with iron hand can come in do turn the rotten economy or maintain status quo so that in mean time majority will become minority and vice versa. remember in india, muslim population has grown from 9% to 20% of india. Once they become 40%, you can see africa in india.

BJP by Nagarajan on 07 Jul 2009

BJP no longer can claim disciplined party. The moment they tasted power, everything went hay ware. Even their caders public behvious is there to see. BJP is also becoming party of Hero Worship. There are so many who have given their life for BJP, but from no where Varun Gandhi is givena ticket. There people who no claim Modi is BJP is Modi like Indira is India; India is Indira like Congress. BJP needs a radical change if they want to regai power.

Re:BJP gone by S.V.Rao on 07 Jul 2009

Mr Sayed, Are you a Pakistani or Indian? If Indian then you should not hate an Indian political party. BJP has Muslim members also. the party will certainly bounce back.

It underlines now.... by Jem Hassan on 07 Jul 2009

I think now we all understand why BJP was not elected by Indians. They lack dicipine...vision...and above all, their all campaign was surrounded with this old man who is on his 80s...BJp infact is in a big crisis. They dont have any popular leaders...the party president himself doesn't understand anything spoken beyond Hindi.Every action is controlled by RSS.They have to get permission from RSS even to sneeze....what a pity...dont wonder if tomorrow it splits into many parties and becoming BLP...BNP...BDP...etc...we already have Uma's BJP...loosers...

Reply to Syed sadiq by Iyer on 07 Jul 2009

I really pity for u guys.If U guys are dreaming BJP's finish, then u will be in fools paradise. Can u name any other party other than congress to match BJP in the national level.U can't.So the picture is clear. The looser can become winner at any time.BJP is a structured, disciplined cadre based party.BJP is not like congress for each and everything Sonia has to open her mouth.I admit BJP faced some set backs. But it can be reversed before next elections. They have the organizational strength.More over please note, every body opposing BJP that which ever state they are ruling have a stable and efficient administration like Gujarat,Karnataka
