Karachi, January 1: Leading Pakistan cricketers on Tuesday expressed anguish over the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and hoped conditions would return to normal as soon as possible.

Former players Rameez Raja, Ejaz Ahmed, Aaqib Javed and current team members Mohammad Asif, Misbah-ul-Haq, Salman Butt and Mohammad Hafeez all felt Benazir’s death was a big loss to Pakistan.

“I have never been interested in politics but her death was a big shock even to me and I constantly kept watching the developments on television. It was a sad day for Pakistan,” Rameez said.

“I pray the country gets back to normal but definitely we have lost a big name in our politics in a sad and tragic manner,” he added.

Ejaz said he was distressed by the events and cricketers were praying for the country’s stability.

“We wish the country can find a good leader soon who can save this country. When a two-time Prime Minister can be killed like this than what security can a common man have,” he questioned.

Aaqib had no doubt Benazir’s death was a defining moment in Pakistan’s political history.

“It is a dangerous setback for the country. The violent reactions were terrible but we all have to work together to bring the country back to normalcy,” he said.

Salman Butt described Benazir as a popular leader and said he was very sad with her death.

Mohammad Hafeez said everyone in Pakistan felt the loss of Benazir’s death and the pain was present in every Pakistani.

“The tragedy of her death was not only felt in Pakistan but internationally. I am sad for the losses suffered by the poor people in the violence that followed,” Hafeez said.

Pacer Mohammad Asif said it was against human nature to murder someone.

“It was very disappointing to see the violent reaction after Benazir’s death and this must stop and we, as a nation, need to remain united and move forward.” Misbah said “It just shows that we need to work together to become a peaceful and successful country,” he said.
