Pune A heart warming gesture on part of Rahul Gandhi brought a 62-year-old woman to tears as the young Congress leader held her in his hands offering water to drink after noticing that she had tripped in the melee caused during his visit to Pune on Tuesday.

When Rahul's car entered Congress Bhavan on Tuesday evening, a lot of jostling took place at the crowded gate as security personnel tried to keep at bay enthusiastic party workers who surged forward raising slogans “Rahul Gandhi Age Badho, Hum Tumhare Saath Hai”.

Malti Bhor, an old woman who had set up a stall in the exhibition of products of women's self-help group called 'Mansi', which was to be visited by the Congress general secretary, fell down in the pushing around and almost fainted.

Rahul noticed the woman falling to the ground and stopped the car midway. He rushed to Malti, supported her with his hands and took a water bottle asking her to drink from it.

“Please forgive me Maji”, were his words as he made her sit comfortably and left to address Congress workers, a little away in the premises.

The woman smiled and kept the water bottle with her as if it was precious memento.

In a five-minute speech Rahul urged party workers to fight the ensuing elections unitedly and re-install a Congress government-led by Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh.

Earlier, he had a meeting with NCP President Sharad Pawar at Vasantdada Sugar Institute at Manjri, around 25 km from here, where he ostensibly got to know the functioning of Sugar technology and cooperative factories.

Media persons were barred during the 20-minute closed door meeting between the two leaders which occurred in the backdrop of vexed seat-sharing issue between Congress and NCP in Maharashtra.

Rahul like Jesus by S.Krishnamurthy on 06 Mar 2009

By giving much publicity to an act any normal person would do, Rauhul is projected and promoted like a saviour, like Jesus giving water to Benhur! When Indians are going to stop hero-worshipping and find leaders who have knowledge and experience and dedication, rather than family names! This drama has been performed by many times by cheap politicians in India. Find something new, Mr. Rahul!!

This youngster is a big fraud by Bishnu Sahay on 05 Mar 2009

"Saviour" Rahul by Hero Vaz on 04 Mar 2009

By his "humanitarian" doing, Rahul Gandhi has "saved" the country (!!!!) like his father "did" - with what result, all Indians know. What Rahul did, any half-decent person would have done in the circumstances. The media foolishly focuses on the petty and often worthless things so called political leaders do to gain cheap popularity so that the politicians can grab power and loot the country.

Good success Rahul -good acting by indian on 04 Mar 2009

Yes, he is indeed a very good growing actor..no doubt.

nothing wrong by ajay on 04 Mar 2009

there is nothing wrong in what rahul gandhi did, it was his duty as a human being. But there is nothing to glorify him too as done in this news. or Indian Express think rahul gandhi is too big for such gustures and if he has done somthing like this he need to be glorified for this? i can accept this glorification only if the people can get roti , kapda and makan which are promised by his family since last 60 yrs but yet to be delivered. brought out every election and forgoten after elections.

The end of Congress rule is imminent by Bamboy on 04 Mar 2009

The aam adami has cried for all these 5 years and with no achievement to show to the people, Congress Party is trying to publish emotional stories about the crown prince. People of India have learnt their lessons in all these years and all these emotion will not fetch votes any more.

Kumar Krishna is the only man with Eyes in Karnataka !! by ANIYAN on 04 Mar 2009

Kumar Krishna, is it that you only have eyes in Karnataka and those people who voted en masse for BJP are deaf and dump?? You may vote for the Chinese party; go ahead. BJP is BJP, it has blossomed and will blossom further.

Rahul's action by The All Knowing on 04 Mar 2009

Some of the people commenting on Rahul's action seem to think that he should have ignored the poor woman and gone on to his meeting as if nothing happened. Perhaps he should have behaved like the ardent devotees who in their eagerness for a darshan of the deity ignore the plight of those around them and trample them to death! Give the guy his due; he did what everyone should do.

Rahul Gandhi deserves Oscar by Nautankee on 04 Mar 2009

Rahul Gandhi desrves Oscar for his acting skills. He is crying heart-rendringly for we Indias but there is no tear in his eyes. We don't want this un-solicited sympathy from the yuvraj if if you can do some thing then ask the Congress governments in AP and Maharstra to stop this epidemic of suicides and poverty. Jao Ho Rahul baba ki; even if Indians go to hell, because they are just subjects of his majesty.

congress-creator of slums by Thomas on 04 Mar 2009

Yes, its absolutely a great news of Rahul Gandhi whose family has never helped poor or slums in the country. They support only the businessman like TATA, Ambani, Quottorachi, Satyam Raju, Srinivas and some more businessman. People should understand the real character of Rahul family. To take rest, every time Sonia family people goes to Andaman. Why dont they go to slums and help them instead.

Drama News by vinod on 04 Mar 2009

He could have carried her and sung a song like MGR used to do in movies.. that would have been a greater show... But he is not the one to be blamed.. he did a natural gesture which a human being was supposed to do.. Such stupid news media who report these stories and make a big scene are the one to be banned

Rahuls Gesture by Kumar Krishna on 04 Mar 2009

People who have commented on this news negatively, please come and see the great rule of BJP in Karnataka ! The government in Karnataka is controlled by Mine Looters and Land Grabbers; Corruption has reached unprecedented levels. A morally corrupt person is leading the Government of Hindu Culture ! In five years of these people`s rule Karnataka will suffer greater damage than in 50 years of Congress misrule. We have a poor choice in these elections - but any day the old scoundrels are better than the new Demons.

Sold out Jounalism....continues in IE by Amit Purohit on 04 Mar 2009

IE reporters cannot be blamed for this type of reporting. Remember their Editor in chief also keeps same attitude while interviewing “This Holy and so kind hearted man” Rahul’s mother also showed same sycophancy. What can be expected from the remaining staff working under him? I anticipate that like all my mails pointing the editor in chief (including his felicitation by GoI on instruction of Italian Madam) has been masked off from the site, this too will follow same fate. But can these papers influence voters, time only will teach them??

Hypocricy by Srikanth on 04 Mar 2009

It is s so sickening to see Indians behave in such a hypocritical and cynical manner! This news item did not carry anything but how a person can help another. People deriding and ridiculing someone must remember that it could be counter-productive in the end. Just remember how Hindutva and socialist brigade of 1960's ridiculed Indira Gandhi by calling her a "gunghi gudiya". Also remember what happened to those people when the supposed to be "gunghi gudiya" ruled India with an iron hand!

'Great Service' by Indian Express !!! by Thomas Varghese on 04 Mar 2009

Jai Ho, Jai Ho, Indian Express; you are doing a lot of service to the family !!! Where has the policy of Shri Goenka gone ?? Are we still living living in the Kingly era ?? Indian Express... come on ... grow up !!

It's a good gesture but that does not mean Rahul Gandhi is suitable for PM post.

enlightenment by Gopinath on 04 Mar 2009

After Jawaharlal Nehru no body in the Gandhi family is even a graduate. But, they get divine enlightenment of a great leader from heaven overnight and we fools have to accept them as leaders. Great!

Italian Mantra by naresh on 04 Mar 2009

Will the Indian Express investigate how much money was offered to that old lady Malti Bhor, (strange, the IE even knows her name) for enacting so sincerely. Comm'on Congress has always bought votes since Independence. That is probably now an Italian way of vooing voters.

Congress is the only party which unites the entire nation. by Nautankee on 04 Mar 2009

Congress is the only party which has supplied the very best leaders of India. This is also the party which unites the entire nation India. The Congress party program does not discriminate anyone, for this party, every person from any caste or religion are treated as equals. Under Congress rule, no enemies of India ever looked down on us and those who did were taught good lessons.Indira was their bravest leader, who went all the way inside Pakistan to free Mujibur Rehman. She was the one, who shoved Mahatma Gandhi's danda in the rear side of goonde leaders.Nehru was a true statesman, Rajiv too was statesman and a modern person in real life.Because of Congress,India is know all around the world. RAHUL GANDHI ZINDABAAD, BHARAT AMAR RAHE

Who created Pakistan? by Maha Nautankee on 04 Mar 2009

Rare qualities like uniting is not in Congress gene. For Congress Party, you, me and other Indians are just votes and they trade on that.

jughead by Ganesh on 04 Mar 2009

The same sympathetic media did not report anything about the interview last week where in Rahul claimed that Gujarat was bigger than Britain and that USA Europe is smaller than India. The psychophants immediately clarified that he reffered to the size of population..But then Gjuarat is smaller than Britain both in population and size. The video of this blunder was immediately removed by the concerned site.

Fooled by Congress by Abdul on 04 Mar 2009

These poor innocent indians will again get fooled by the cute face of party guy Rahul who has noting to do with India and its progress .Congress is having existance because of Garibie and logically if they remove Garibie ,their existance will also gone.

At the least by Raj on 04 Mar 2009

WOW Rahul helped an old woman and brought her to tears??? He must be an angel. After decades of inefficient and corrupt rule by the Gandhi family, the least he could do is help this old woman. And for our pseudo secular media it suddenly becomes a proof of Gandhi family's goodness. And even when Modi and Vajpayee manage to change the lives of millions with their policies and actions, the media cannot see beyond false accusations leveled against them. How pathetic is that?

Need to be Positive by Davis on 04 Mar 2009

We need to look at people as he is. A comparison is a bad politics attacking persons. I mean this particlar article carries an example of humanness and nothing about the policies of Congress or BJP. A common mistake is to mix up persons with policies. Let us be positive. Writing such examples in the lives of national leaders become inspirational for others. If you or Sauraub or I have done the same, it would not as inspirational as of a national leader. Thank you and I have no intention of hurting you.
