With a population of 75,000, spread across three municipal wards, Thanthania is the first place in Kolkata to drown even if the rainfall is as low as 30 mm.
Last year, due to rain the three KMC run schools remained close for several days owing to the accumulation of water in the school buildings. Also, more than 50 people were admitted to Beliaghata I D hospitals due to enteric disorders.
Following this, Member-Mayor-in-Council of the Drainage department, Farzana Choudhury proposed a plan of installing a water lifting pumping station in Thanthania. But no step has been taken till date. The entire area has one pumping station equipped with two low capacity machines to drain out the stagnant water.
“We had planned to build a lifting pumping station to drain out the accumulated water from the streets of Thanthania. But it has not been possible as we were busy with the construction of three other pumping stations in Kolkata,” said Choudhury.
According to the records of the Drainage department, on an average KMC spends Rs 174 lakh every year for renovating and maintaining the 19 pumping stations existing in different parts of the city. And out of 96 pumps, only 18 are functioning properly.
