Mumbai, May 22 Miffed with illegal structures constructed on the sides of the nullahs, including a construction by the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA), Mayor Shubha Raul has ordered an inquiry into how permissions were given to build these structures.

The Mayor has also directed the civic administration to announce the names of elected representatives who create hurdles in nullah widening and get stay order on demolishing encroachments.

To review nullah-cleaning activities undertaken by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, Raul on Thursday visited several nullahs across the city. Though she expressed satisfaction on the cleaning of nullahs, Raul stated that the nullahs should be kept free of encroachment.

During her visit to Cleveland bunder nullah, she noticed an SRA building and asked, “When the BMC is spending a huge amount of money to construct a pumping station which will help reduce flood risk in the city, how can permissions be given to construct a building here?” Civic officials said that the SRA building was built for rehabilitation four years ago and there is a stay in place.

She also said strict action should be taken against encroachers and the BMC should not hesitate to file police complaints. “If political leaders are interfering in nullah-cleaning or taking action against encroachers, police complaint should be filed against them. The BMC should announce names of these leaders publicly,” Raul said.
