The power failure had nearly derailed the match -- much to the embarrassment of the city. A blame game has predictably started between the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) and the Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation.
During a book release at the Writers’ Buildings on Tuesday, Bhattacharjee said: “A committee is going to be formed to look into the matter. Minister Subhas Chakraborty will soon submit the names of those who will figure in this body.”
Subhas Chakraborty said he has already sent his recommendations to the chief minister on who could be on this committee. This body will then submit its report before the next IPL match between the Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians at the Eden Gardens on April 29.
On Wednesday, Chief Secretary Amit Kiran Deb will finalise the names with the sports minister. Sports secretary A K Patnaik is most likely to head the committee. The others might include Additional Commissioner of Police Subrata Narayan Sarker, Engineer-in-Chief of the Public Works Department (PWD) Pradip Kanti Deb and special secretary (Sports) M L Saha.
The PWD has already absolved itself of any guilt. The department has recently made it clear that the responsibility for the floodlights lay entirely with an agency hired by the CAB.

It is one thing to form committees and find answers as to 'why' lights went out, but a completely different ball game (pardon the pun) to prevent it happening again. It is an absolute disgrace that this happened at a high profile event when people from all cricketing nations of the world were watching. It makes a mockery of our credibility in the world as an emerging superpower. Do we not have any national pride at all?
