Chandigarh, January 20 Files of a number of projects related to road safety are gathering dust at the UT Administration’s Engineering Wing. Many of these were suggested by the Chandigarh Traffic Police. Newsline lists several such pending projects, which could have solved many traffic problems had they been completed.

Installation of Automatic Traffic Control signals at Sector 34-35 small rotary

The UT Administration must have changed its strategies and plans a number of times when it comes to dealing with traffic congestion, pile-ups and accidents taking place at the rotary — from removing the rotary and constructing a median to increasing the rotary's diameter to replacing the rotary with ATC signals. All these, however, haven't amounted to much. Even after two years of speculations and plans, the rotary remains intact and the problem aggravating with every passing day.

Proper lighting arrangement at cycle and rickshaw tracks

The slow-carriage ways or cycle or rickshaw tracks, which are supposed to be used by the slow-carriage vehicles, are without any lighting facilities. The cyclists, rickshaw pullers or other slow-moving vehicles, therefore, do not use the tracks during evening or night hours and add to the chaos.

Construction of more slip roads at roundabouts

Chandigarh Traffic Police has written to the UT Administration's engineering wing for constructing slip roads at as many as 13 points, identified on Shanti Path and Udyog Path, for decongestion of traffic. Nothing has moved so far.

Installation of road safety plastic cones at roundabouts or intersections at slip roads

Nothing much has happened to the proposal of installing road safety plastic cones at roundabouts and intersections at slip roads to decongest traffic on busy roads. Though such cones have been installed at a few slip roads, most of the areas remain neglected.

Installation of high-mast tower lights or flood light for major intersections

In the wake of rising number of accidents, particularly during the night hours, the city police have requested the UT Administration to install high-mast tower lights or flood lights at major intersections, where heavy traffic flow is witnessed even during late hours.

Installation of ATC signals at roundabouts on Dakshin Marg

The work of installation of ATC signals at three roundabouts - Kisan Bhawan, Gurdwara roundabout and Labour Chowk - was to be completed by January 15. The work, which though started, is nowhere near completion.

Road dividers (Medians)

The busy roads dividing Sectors 45-46; 46-47; 41-42; 39-Maloya village, etc. are numerous such points where the administration has been asked to construct medians and road dividers. The proposals are stll pending.
