Mumbai, August 1 While the state Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) and cyber forensic experts are working around the clock on the Ahmedabad terror e-mail tracked to US national Ken Haywood’s flat in Navi Mumbai’s Sanpada area, the Cyber Crime Investigation Cell (CCIC) of the Mumbai Police Crime Branch has identified all major “hotspots” for unsecured WiFi internet networks in the city. They are now monitoring all user activity on the networks concerned.

“Unsecured WiFi hotspots in the city can be taken advantage of by elements with wrong motives who want to maintain their anonymity and avoid being traced through Internet Protocol (IP) address. Therefore, the matter is being taken seriously. Officers of the CCIC are very techno-savvy, irrespective of their rank, and have already drawn up a list of such hotspots in the city. The usage of these WiFi networks is under surveillance for security reasons,” said a senior Crime Branch officer.

He, however, did not wish to reveal the number of hotspots now under the police scanner.

Investigators have revealed that Haywood’s unsecured WiFi network had been tapped to send the terror mail from an e-mail account created just 10 minutes before the e-mail was sent.

According to experts, metropolitan cities are teeming with such WiFi hotspots where people can tap a network simply by driving through the area, depending on the strength and range of the network. Tech-buffs are known to identify such hotspots and pass the word around to friends.

BMC too pitches in with security measures
* With rising footfalls making malls an easy target for terror attacks, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is now considering a ‘security audit’ for all city malls, a mandatory exercise that will have to be undertaken by owners before they get permissions for occupation
* Also, the BMC will put in place extra security measures for its city-wide WiFi project. “The plan is still being drafted but we will talk to technology experts who will chalk out necessary security precautions,” said a senior civic official
* Security near hospitals will be tackled seriously too, with 64 CCTVs plus scanners and metal detectors to be installed within three weeks at these hospitals, 619 vacant posts of security guards to be filled within eight days
* CCTVs and scanners will also be installed at the city’s five entry points. “We will install web-enabled CCTVs which will help us monitor vehicular movement,” said Joint Municipal Commissioner V Radha. While helping cast the octroi net wider, these grabs will also be useful for the police. Tenders for these CCTVs will be issued in a month.
