Bangalore The October 2004 death of his wife Maitro Devi has returned to haunt Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa in an election year.

A magistrate's court in the Chief Minister's home district of Shimoga has ordered a fresh police report, by March 31, into the death of Yeddyurappa's wife under mysterious circumstances at their home in Shimoga on October 16, 2004.

The magistrate court directive has come on the basis of a complaint filed by an advocate, R Sheshadri, who has raised questions about how an adult could have slipped into an underground water sump with a narrow opening while trying to fetch water.

At the time of his wife's death Yeddyurappa was the Opposition leader in Karnataka.

The case had been closed after the police had during its investigations in 2004 found no cause to believe that there was any foul play. Sheshadri has in his complaint said the death occurred after Yeddyurappa assaulted his wife after an argument resulting in her death.

The advocate has in his complaint sought proceedings against Yeddyurappa, his daughter, two sons and family servants on charges of murder, fabrication of evidence and preventing Government servants from discharging their duty.

The complainant has stated that Yeddyurappa attended official functions on the day despite the news of his wife's death and claimed Government re-imbursements.

The Judicial Magistrate First Class at the Shimoga court, S N Kalkali, ordered the fresh probe and report.

The Chief Minister termed the case the "biggest crisis of his life" during a visit to Shimoga on Sunday. He said he was ready to face it.

Chief Minister of Karnataka is gulity by Amrith Rao on 02 Feb 2009

It is important to state that the Sangh Parivar has no respect for women. It is a party of the racial pure male. What that purity means is totally another question. A party that justifies sati, beats up women in the pretext of pub culture, considers them as mere mothers confined to homes in the re-writing of history is unlikely to honour womenhood. In the public realm, people of Karnataka hold the Chief Minister responsible for the death of his wife. He had found another woman and he may not have found his wife good enough for him. This is the respect BJP has for women. They would like women to be Sitas of Ramayana who are willing to be subordinated. It is a pity that law could be used to wrong the right.

anti-indian by bil on 03 Feb 2009

the guy who made above comment must be one of those owners of pubs that do not have proper licenses and still serve liquor to the society. When liquor is already destroying wide segment of society by enslaving men, people of this kind are trying to enslave women so that they can exploit them. And also Amrit Rao refuses to move on from centuries old sati, casteism , untouchability and still peevishly complains about those to cover up his weakness, laziness

Yeddyur's dillema by Laxminarayan on 02 Feb 2009

Like this is the only blemish in Yeddyur's resume. These politicians are generally cold blooded killers. It is quite obvious how Yeddyur's wife died. It was no accident or suicide. In developed countries such perpetrators would be prosecuted irresepective of their political clout. But in countries like India anything goes as far as politicians and celebrities are concerned.
