A man who drove his wife to suicide with his demand for a motorcycle in dowry has been sentenced to 10 years rigorous imprisonment by a Delhi court.

The convict’s brother was also given a similar sentence. “Evidence brought on record is overwhelming to conclude that Sunita was treated cruelly by the accused, soon before her death, in connection with dowry demand,” Additional Sessions Judge R K Yadav said while imposing a fine of Rs 15,000 each on the two convicts.

It also directed that a compensation of Rs 25,000 be paid to the victim’s brother out of the recovered fine. Sunita’s husband and East Delhi resident Lachhman and his brother Kaushal were held guilty for matrimonial cruelty and 304 B (dowry death) of IPC.
