Kevin Rudd

New Delhi Expressing "disgust" over attacks on Indian students in his country, Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said on Thursday that his government was committed to use "full force" of law to protect them.

"As Prime Minister of Australia, I am deeply disturbed and disgusted by attacks of violence against any foreign students studying in our country as our guests," he said, referring to the "criminal attacks targeting Indian students."

"These attacks will not be tolerated. They will be dealt with by the full force of the Australian law enforcement and criminal justice systems," he said, delivering a speech at the Indian Council of World Affairs in New Delhi.

Rudd said his government was committed to "doing its utmost to guarantee that the sons and daughters, Indian parents entrust to the care of the Australian community, remain safe and come home with a valuable education and wonderful memories."

Rudd's remarks are apparently part of the damage control exercise taken up by the Australian government in a big way fearing that the assaults will discourage Indian students to take up studies in that country resulting in financial loss.

With nearly 100,000 of its students studying in Australia, India has recently overtaken China to become the largest source of overseas students in 'Down Under'. Reports have it that Australia earns approximately 15 billion Australian dollars from international students.

ALL ARE EQUAL BEFORE LAW by B S GANESH BANGALORE on 14 Nov 2009

It is said: %u201CAll are equal before law%u201D but in practice this is applicable only to common people and not moneyed and powerful people. When a common official is suspected of malpractices, he would be shunted to some other place and even suspended. But when a judge is suspected and proof is given by Tamil Nadu government, it is not correct for the judiciary or even for him to continue. If Justice Dinakaran and KODA are honest, instead of emphasising that the allegation is false, politically motivated etc they should say %u201Cwe are honest and We don%u2019t want to create problems and let the judiciry investigate and prove the allegations%u201D. Instead, they want to sit in judgments. At least the CJI should have advised DINAKARAN to go on leave. This shows that law is not equal to all. B S Ganesh Bangalore

kevin rudd by gibo on 13 Nov 2009

Kevin Rudd cant genuinely keep those promises. State police in Australia are too few and too busy. Law and order is crumbling through lack of funding. The Lebanese gangs are too powerful and police are afraid of them. The Lebanese gangs are the ones targeting the Indian students. This overall situation may change if Australia gets control of lawlessness, but that will take billions of dollars. Gibo ex-New South Wales policeman.

Self Proclaimed Australians by Kian Noctor on 13 Nov 2009

Its disgusting that the ethnic English aall themselves as Australians. They are like the rest of the society pure ethnic English who migrated from their motherland. Well they destroyed the souls of the decent natives. The Federal parliment is dominated by the ethnic English and one of them is touring Delhi at the current time. They are the most dysfunctioal families I have ever seen in my life. The court and police system is in crisis and beyond repair

Rudds India visit by Roger on 13 Nov 2009

PM Rudd has reaffirmed that the ban on uranium sales to India will continue. Uranium will continue to be sold to China and other countries but NOT India which has NO history of waging wars or annexations. Racist Attacks on Indian students continue relentlessly. The question that begs attention at this juncture is, Why should India even bother to promote business relations with a nation such as Australia? Soon if not already, they will be redundant, irrelavant and insignificant in the global platform.

No one asked the students to go there by Chander on 12 Nov 2009

No one asked the students to spend lakhs and go there for a mediocre education which you can get in India as well. They are going disguised as students to immigrate to Australia. Our own country is far more racist that the Aussies anyone want to debate that.

Racism is omnipresent by Megh on 13 Nov 2009

Racism exists in all societies; In the US, UK, Australia and even Japan, Korea and China. Its not unique to India. Just as Racism, casteism prevails too in the East especially in Japan and Korea. Class divisions are deep rooted issues in the western society.

NPT is a farce by Australian on 12 Nov 2009

The world has recognized that NPT is flawed but not Australia. They are willing to sell Uranium to China which was a signatory to the NPT but provided Nukes to Pakistan but not to India which has never proliferated.

Economy of Australia and Migrants by Dinesh Borole on 12 Nov 2009

New product research and development will suffer, thus economy will suffer, That will pull down world economy indirectly to some extend.

Full force? by Roger on 12 Nov 2009

In the last attack which occured in the week gone by, it seems the police told the victim " they were busy" and couldnot come down to take down the complaint; they then insisted with the victim that the attack was not racially motivated but instead it was the robbery. Thats the attitude of Rudds civil defense police force who dont even wish to entertain complains from indian students and here in Delhi PM Rudd says he will use " full force" after over 40 attacks and 1 conviction that i have heard off. Indeed Mr. PM. Australia will have to be avoided to teach this country of hypocrites a lesson.

Busy police by Jim of OZ on 13 Nov 2009

Which attack was this, the guy that decided to sleep at a bus stop in a bad neigbourhood at 2am at night? Maybe the police were actually busy, police have limited men and resources, As the crime was actually over and the victim was no longer in danger it was no longer an ememergency situation.

Students visiting temple by Roger on 13 Nov 2009

btw, the attack i have refered to was on the two indian students going to a temple and not the one sleeping in the bus stop.

They are hypocrites by Sunil on 12 Nov 2009

They are exactly that and Indians need to ensure that Australia is confronted. We need to stop their players from playing in IPL and send a strong message to them we will not tolerate this any more. Here they suppress the news about the attacks. Swearing at Indians in some parts is common too.

Indian students must apologise to Rudd now by Maulana jawaher Lull Nehloo on 12 Nov 2009

All Indian students must now touch Rudds white Christian feet and ask for his forgiveness.

Can't trust this Rudd guy! by Raj Chander on 12 Nov 2009

As another reader has asked - what was his government doing - sleeping? He is just making these statements "to protect the Indian students" since he is in India. Nothing will change. We have to change our own attitude and stop garlanding and stop putting Tilaks in their foreheads when they visit India. We give the foreigners too much importance and make them feel that they are superior to us. They are not!

Rudd promised Indian students safety by Gordon Jacobs on 12 Nov 2009

Make no mistake, this Ozzie is in our country and will make all sorts of promised.Once he leaves our shores his tune will change. frankly what do you expect from Australians, we know their history.

safety of indian students by p v rao on 12 Nov 2009

i am surprised the hue and cry raised by us about the attacks on indian students in Australia, where as we are mum and inactive about the atrocities being committed on the indian students in higher learning institutes in India itself inspite of various legislations. Further, the students who aregoing to Australia are not only for education but also an eye on their permanant settlement in that country in a majority of cases. Hope this fact should be kept in mind while we comment on the PM's effectiveness.

australlia by A BIHARI on 12 Nov 2009

if india can not protest non-marathis in maharasthra, how can she expect Australia to protect them?

Half Right by Rodgers Father on 12 Nov 2009

Whilst its duty of every country to protect one from becoming the victim of a crime no one repeat no one can guarantee that all the crime will seize To say that would be lying. Do you think for one moment that the Australian states would have seized trying? No government in the world can guarantee that police will be present in every street, every time of the day. Let%u2019s get realistic. This is not saying that crime against these students is good. No one repeat no one deserves to be assaulted. Also lets take some personal responsibility.

Half Right by Carol on 12 Nov 2009

Sensible comment. We have a population of 21 million, India's newspapers don't report on crimes committed against Aussies by other races, which makes crimes committed against Indians small by comparison. None of these crimes are condoned by Aussies, and no police could prevent them happening. They will continue but hopefully can be greatly reduced. Indians have enemies amongst their own race and other immigrants here who dislike/hate each other, that shouldn't be forgotten when discussing this.

For Your Info by Rodgers Father on 13 Nov 2009

In today%u2019s local paper in Sydney highlights that three Indian business man have been charged for arson. Yet at the height of students unrest these arson was branded as bombing and of racial motive. Now it appears that these Indians did for insurance purpose.I bet this news will never make it into Indian media.

Your right by Jim of OZ on 13 Nov 2009

If Inidans watched the Aussie Media and saw the almost nightly video footage of white and othe Aussie races getting stabbed and bashed to a pulp by the same drug and Alcohol fueled street gangs then they would realsie its not jsut Indians getting targeted.

Rudd to visit China after his India trip by Juan Carlos d. Autopista on 12 Nov 2009

Rudd's words will be judged after his trip to China. He will directly visit China after his stay in India. I am sure he will promise more to China. We shall then compare.

Its a sham whatever way you look at it ... by Manoj on 12 Nov 2009

The Australian PM should be encouraged to open their universities in India itself. This way, Australia will not have "Dirty Indians" as economic migrants. Obviously, this wont work as the majority of Indian students are "Economic Migrants" and Aussies have "Sham University" using this weakness to gobble up the "Education Dollars".

What was the Australian govt. doing for the past many months. by Linob on 12 Nov 2009

What was the Australian govt. doing for the past many months. Were they sleeping? They realised only after too many atrocities happened on Indian students. This proves that Australian govt. is not at all interested with Indian counterparts. If this had been a case with US or UK nationals, the matter would have solved within 1 or 2 days.Australian prime minister assures harmonys in the future by saying that "they are welcome guests in our country...We have have an obligation to extend the hand of friendship and support to all Indian students". Who knows how many cases are unbroken.

Rudd is anti-Hindu and anti-India, so is Congress. by Boby Mehta on 12 Nov 2009

Rudd is saving 10 billion dollars profit from India. He is China's man, his son-in-law is Chinese. Today another student was harrased, he did not call the police. Rudd will not do anything unless Goofee government is kicked out. Indian Express is doing the right thing by publishing attacks on Indians.
