London 'Titanic' star Kate Winslet is a 'national treasure' after she became the first actress to be audited by the UK government.

The value of the Oscar-winning actress to the country has been gauged at a staggering 60 million pounds, according to an analysis of her value to Britain by economists funded by the government, reported Telegraph online.

The 34-year-old was audited by the UK Film Council as it seeks to develop a formula for assessing the value of a "creative person" to the economy.

Winslet was chosen as a test case for the calculation because she has a strong track record and is well known abroad.

Jeremy Hunt, the shadow culture secretary, said that Winslet is a good example on how to rekindle the spirit of creative fever once known as cool Britannia.

"I think she is an extraordinary actress, I loved her in Revolutionary Road, but also as a symbol of what Britain can offer the world," said Hunt.

Hunt said he was delighted by the recognition that Winslet, who won the Oscar for best actress this year for her role in 'The Reader', is so valuable to British culture.

The 'Winslet algorithm' as it has been referred to, will be used by diplomats and businessmen promoting the British film industry abroad.
