Over 500 participants are also expected from several states, including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh besides competitors from the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), Border Security Force (BSF) and the Army. They will vie for top honours in events like Alpine and nordic ski besides ice and figure skating.
In a glittering ceremony here that marked beginning of a six-day-long torch run, Kalmadi stressed on the peace initiative through such sporting events. Kalmadi emphasised the significance of sports in bringing international peace.
“We hope in the near future we will invite our neighbours, including Pakistan for an international sports event there. Such events will also be conducive to trace out the local talents in the Himalayan state,” he said.
Kalmadi also said the IOA would consider outstanding athletes emerging in the event for Winter Olympic Games.
He also said the state had immense potential in tourism and peaceful conditions would enhance its opportunities in the sector.
“We should try to bring parmanent peace in the northern state which has immense potential in tourism sector. We are trying to promote tourism in the state by organising the National Winter Games this year,” he said.
