With eyes set on polls, Cong starts wooing voters of city wards

Chandigarh, January 20 With their eyes set on the next Parliament election, the Congress leaders have started holding meetings with the city residents. During one such meeting, the Chandigarh Territorial Congress Committee president, B B Bahl, today claimed that they are going to win the next election by a margin of over 1-lakh votes.

Local MP and Union Minister of State for Finance Pawan Kumar Bansal has started interaction with the residents of different wards. Under the series of such meetings, today Bansal and other senior Congress leaders including Bahl, Mayor Pardeep Chhabra, Senior Deputy Mayor Anju Beniwala, Deputy Mayor Harphool Chander Kalyan, senior Congress leader G K Chatrath and Councillor Anu Chatrath held a meeting with the residents of Ward no. 2 which includes Sector 15, Panjab University, Punjab Engineering College, PGI and Khuda Lahora.

Speaking on the occasion, Mayor Pardeep Chhabra said that during the tenure of Bansal as an MP, city has witnessed the flow of grants from the Central government. He said due to the initiatives taken by him, Rs 300 crore has been provided to the housing scheme, especially for the economically weaker sections and retired employees. He said Rs 100-crore additional grant has been provided to the PGI, while Rs 50-crore additional grant was given to the UT Administration. Last year, the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation was provided with Rs 100 crore for water supply system in parks, he added.

“We are going to win the next election by a margin of over 1-lakh votes. If we get less no of votes than we have expected then we will think that we have lost the election,” said Bahl. He asked the party workers to mobilise voters in favour of Bansal.

In his address, Bansal said that his main thrust would be to ensure overall development of the city and the welfare of its residents. “I have always made efforts to get more grants for the city,” he added. Various resident welfare associations honoured Bansal and his wife on the occasion.
