New Delhi, October 3: Tatas on Friday pulled out of West Bengal for its Rs 1 lakh car Nano project, blaming it on continuing agitation by the Opposition parties, spearheaded by Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee.

Addressing the media after meeting with Chief Minister Budhadeb Bhattacharjee, Ratan Tata, however, said that Nano will come out as per the committed time.

"Nano will come on time. We will make make-shift arrangement to meet deadline," Tata said.

"We regret the decision. But there was little choice but move out of Singur,” he said.

The move has been prompted after taking into account issues such as well-being of its employees at the project and safety of contractors as well as that of its vendors.

The persisting agitation by the Opposition parties has been the sole reason behind the decision to pull out the project, he said.

The company is exploring offers from three-four states about the new site of the project and the new location would be announced soon, Tata said.

"There was little choice but to move out of Singur," 70-year-old Tata said.

The Rs 1,500-crore project was announced in May 2006 for which the work started in January 2007. It ran into rough weather with the Trinamool Congress strongly opposing the land acquisition by the state for the project.

"To the best of my knowledge, the land was acquired legally. It was done transparently and the compensation was based fairly," he said.

Efforts by the West Bengal Chief Minister and Governor Gopal K Gandhi to salvage the project turned futile with Banerjee unwilling to relent on her demand of returning 300 acres of acquired land to farmers.

Tata said the move has been prompted after taking into account issues such as well-being of its employees at the project and safety of contractors as well as that of its vendors.

On the future association of Tatas with the state, he said the group already has considerable presence here and it has not lost enthusiasm in future investment.

"I hope West Bengal prosper in the future. In the future we will be here again. We don't believe that we have lost our enthusiasm in investing in West Bengal and assure that we will invest in the state for new projects," he said.

Tata said the pull-out decision would have no bearing on group's future investments in the state.

Tata's Pull out by Ketan M on 04 Oct 2008

Why everyone is loosing their sleep, if one of the TATA Industries has moved out. W. Bengal is samll state, need land for agricultures and also need to accomodate influx of Bangladeshi, who are arriving on red carpet spread by politicians.

Great lesson to Tatas and business People by Bhagwath on 04 Oct 2008

Great lesson to Tatas and business People who want to enjoy at the expense of the other people.Tatas are behaving as though their own land is snached by somebody. It is Tatas who illegally grabbed land with the govt as broker.Tatas should try to do Business with human ethics and values. We Indians donot need any Nano cars if they cannot do business like that. And we donot need any emploment from tatas at the expense of some poor people. There are many small business people who are willing to do business ethically with human values.

Bengal and its policies by Syamasundara prasad Turaga on 04 Oct 2008

Dear Editor, it is the magnanimity of Ratan Tata to tell that they are considering to invest in W Bengal, in future, but to my thinking is nothing but a lip service only. I am sure Tata will not come back to ill tempered bengal. Those days of prospority and hospitality by bengalis in general were gone long back. Thanks to the communist rule of Jyotibasu for over 25 years during which bengalis habve learned to oppose only but not accomodating invester to survive there. The slogan " Cholbena" % "Korbena" lety it be the slogan of bengalis and ultimately bengal will become industrial / business DESERT. Still the common people did not realize that by electing Left Parties they set in DOOM for themselves. They donot understand and not willing to listen also. Let Mamta Benerji fully destroy the last straw of development in bengal.

MAMTA THE GREAT! by M.S. Mantri on 04 Oct 2008

What a Sad day for indian industry. Almost 1500 Crores going down the drain due to sheer craziness of one woman. And nobody could stop this from happening. How could west bengal govt. let this happen? They just sat in Kolkata watching all Tamasha in Singur and gave Mamta and her goons (read poor farmers) a free hand. Why they could not maintain a law

Nano pull out from WB by R.K. Bansal on 04 Oct 2008

As many of you have said, it is truly sad that WB lost a good project. It is a proof, if one was needed, that Indian politicians know nothing other than strikes and agitations. Communists are masters of that but other parties are not far behind. All political parties place their own interests above peoples interest or that of the nation.

TATA PULL OUT by NAGRAJ on 04 Oct 2008

YES WELL DONE TATA THESE POLITICIANS SHOULD BE TAUGHT A LESSON. THESE POLITICIANS HAVE NO AGENDA AND THEY USE POOR PEOPLE FOR THEIR VOTE BANK POILITICS AND THE LEADERS WHO INITIATED ALL THESE TAMASHA ARE MENTALLY UNSTABLE. EVEN IF TATA'S HAD AGREED IT COULD HAVE BEEN A TORTURE FOR REST OF THE TIME AND EVERY DAY ONE PROBLEM OR OTHER THESE POLITICIANS WILL CREATE. THIS PLACE IS UNFIT FOR DEVELOPMENT.

SEZs over fertile land? by Arundhati on 04 Oct 2008

Why do we establish industries over fertile soil. Can we not do this on barren land. It is accepted fact that the barren land always provides strong foundation for the construction. By permitting SEZ to be established over fertile soil we are not helping the matter. A time may come when we may have to import food because we will have no more land left to cultivate. It will not affect people like Tata and Ambani because they can always import the food that they need. They will always have that money.

Thanks Mamata by Deb on 04 Oct 2008

I'm happy that TATA moved out. People of WB should suffer for their choice of communists. If you choose garbage then you get garbage....Mamata and CPM are two sides of the same coin. Communists stalled the development of India and now they face the music. Thanks Mamata for teaching CPM a great lesson.

Kudos to Tata by Pranav on 04 Oct 2008

You are very right Mr. Tata they cannot put a gun to your head and ask you to work. For people putting up industry are creators of wealth whilst the so called gun toting Politicians are nothing but looters.Enough is enough No more looting will be allowed by the creators of wealth. You put a gun to my head I will stop creating wealth is what the Industrialist should say instead of licking the backsides of so called politicians. If calling a spade spade is said to be arrogance then so be it we the creators of wealth are arrogant at least we do not stoop to be the looters.Mr. Tata has shown you a way me man enough to follow it is my firm advise to present and future creators of wealth

Politics over national interest by Chandrakant Marathe on 04 Oct 2008

Where is the role of the central government?? a government which was so desperate to sign nuclear agreement with USA, Prime Minister and other ministers going to US to achieve their goal but when it comes to national industry problem in a state where their party is not ruling, our prime minister sees no role in salvaging a 1500 crore investment and thousands of emplyment to the people of Bengal. Where is Sonia Gandhi? or UPA is in hand and glow with Mamata Banergy to score political points against communists!!! this shows that interest of country and its people does not matter to our political class. What matters is vote bank and politics of convenience. Is't it proves that the present government is anti national??

with regret we are moving out of bengal by baba kumar on 04 Oct 2008

For Tatas once bitten twice shy, tatas will not come to bengal anymore.Mamata banerji who practises destructive politics should be solely responsible for tatas exit.It is a balack day for Bengal. When she dies please bury her somehere in the Singur land.As i see bengal will be a land of hawkers and paupers.NO MULTINATIONAL WILL COME TO BENGAL WITH THIS ATTITUDE OF THE BENGALIS.If your own industralists are chased away like this how do you expect foreign industry to be set up in bengal. The bengalis have to change their mindset to move foward..It has been made worse by the states communist rule. When you think you are too smart then you have to pay the price for it.Destructive politics should give way to cooperativ politics which the bengali politicians should adopt.Anyway Tata must have given security of utmost importance, which i dont blame them with so many being employed there.

too late by praveer kumar shukla on 03 Oct 2008

Finally after a long struggle farmers were able to ensure that industrialisation do not happen at cost of agriculture. Fertile land has never been in abundant. It is really disgusting to see that fertile land is used for industries and the land not fit for agriculture remain useless. But blaming Mamata Banerjee for same is not justified. Mamta was active in nandigram and she got in singur lately. But the project is facing problems since beginning. If I am not wrong then same mr. Ratan Tata has stated on national media some time back that COMPETITORS ARE CREATING PROBLEMS AT SINGUR AND HE IS HAVING PROOFS FOR SAME.Projects like NANO are quite cost sensitive and I was surprised to know that TATAs are going for not only a green field project but also at a very new location having no infrastructure for industry. If Mamta Banerjee was not involved then also they could not have run the plant successfully.TATAs are having surplus infrastructuaral support at few places, they should utilse same

Sad day by Vidya on 03 Oct 2008

A sad day indeed when bullies win! But the Left itself has played spoilsport on so may occasions that they cannot complain now. The people of WB have no well wishers either in the Government or in the opposition.

Tatas -hero or villains? by KSC Nair on 03 Oct 2008

Ask Atchutanandan, Kerala CM. For him Tata's are only unscrupulous land-grabbers. Politburo should now find the Highest Common Factor for industry friendly comrades of all varieties.

WELL DONE TATA by N.J GEORGE on 03 Oct 2008

IT IS A VERY WELL TIMED AND PROPER DECISION CONSIDERING ALL ASPECTS.IT IS TIME THAT OUR OSTERICH LIKE POLITICIANS DO SOME INTROSPECTION. ONCE AGAIN CONGRATS RATTAN.

Nono out. Let's discuss next target. by venky kambhampaty on 03 Oct 2008

Congratulations Comrades. Now go to China and collect your gift bag and move on to shutdown another project. You should be very proud of your accomplishment.

Nano ot of W.Bengal by Jay Ravi on 03 Oct 2008

During the last four decades, the Left-overs have reduced the most industrialized state to being the armpit of India and now Mamata is playing a one-upmanship game. The tragedy is that the Left ideology has been drilled into several generations with devastating effect. The vast majority of Bengalis start their day, careers with a free booting and a cholbe-na attitude. With the extent of brain-washing that has gone in, this state is NOT going anywhere till there is a sea change in attitudes. That is not likely to happen -- with the Bangladeshi infiltrators voting for the CPIM a ground reality, there is no light at the end of the tunnel. Also, there is a clear and definite danger that much of the Eastern/NE will be lost to China/Bangladesh with the active connivance of the Left, during our lifetime. Singur is but one manifestation of the cancerous politics in West Bengal. The dangers need to be articulated to the Bengalis.

Self Serving Mamta by Sunil Maingi on 03 Oct 2008

For her own narrow political ends, Mamta Bannerjee has torpedoed and very successfully sunk the Nano project in Bengal. She has for now, scared away any kind of industrial investment in the state. This way she has blocked creation of several thousand new jobs, not only in this project, but in several other projects, which could have come up in the state. It seems that politicians like her are only interested in power and not in the prosperity of the people.

Nano out from Bengal by Varind on 03 Oct 2008

Dirty politics has succeeded tuning Nano out from Bengal. Congress has avenged CPM's withdrawl of support at centre by conniving with TMC and with the help of SP. Nevertheless it is a bad day for Indian industry. The liberal face of PM has been exposed.

Nano Project by Dulal Das on 03 Oct 2008

It was not Industry Vs Agriculture. It was greed and political power game played by our so called "for the people" visionary leaders that will take WB another 20 years behind other states.

TATAS FORCED TO MOVE OUT OF SINGRUR by S.K. KUMAR on 03 Oct 2008

IT IS REALLY DISGUSTING TO SEE THE MANNER IN WHICH SOME OF OUR POLITICIANS ARE UNNECESSARILY COMING IN THE WAY OF INDUSTRIAL, EDUCATIONAL AND SPORTS, ETC., FOR THEIR SELFISH INTERESTS. THE RIGHT MINDED GENERAL PUBLIC MUST CONDEMN SUCH RECKLESS AND SELFISH POLITICIANS AS OTHERWISE OUR BELOVED COUNTRY WILL BE RUINED RAPIDLY.

Tata pulls out by Dr.Ajay Kumar on 03 Oct 2008

Sad and shocking.!! One of the saddest day in the history of India. With friends like MamtaBannerji, who needs enemy ? And patriots like CPIs/CPMs leaders, who needs traitors ?

Black day for Indian Industry by Varinder on 03 Oct 2008

Politics of revenge and narrow mindedness of TMC, Congress and SP has brought this situation for TATA to move out NANO plant How PM who is leballed as liberal economist, remained a mute spectator? Poor people and farmers will ask this question for years to come not only in Bengal but allover India.

Black Day ?? by Praveen on 04 Oct 2008

What kind Black Day?When the politicians dont want the state to progress and people support it. PM has no business interfering with state problems.
