With unmarked speedbreakers, it’s a bumpy ride all the way

Ludhiana, January13 Among various traffic problems that the city faces on its roads is unmarked speedbreakers.

Be it BRS Nagar, Kichlu Nagar, Gurdev Singh Nagar, Model Town or any other areas in the city, almost nowhere have the speedbreakers on the link or interior roads been marked in white strips for the convenience of the commuters.

Leading to minor accidents and even collisions in some cases when the drivers apply instant brakes to avoid jumps over these speedbreakers, those travelling on these roads for the first time spot the speedbreakers only when there is absolutely no time to slow down.

The municipal corporation has turned a blind eye to the threat posed by the unmarked speedbreakers, mostly constructed in two layers at various roads — the glaring examples of which are found before KGC Kidney and Gastro Clinic at BRS Nagar Block B, the road leading to Kichlu Nagar market from Udham Singh Nagar has four such speedbreakers; there’s one at the interior road in Gurdev Nagar, connecting Flamez Mall to Aarti Chowk.

“When I passed through this road in the morning on scooter, there existed two unmarked speedbreakers. In the evening, however, another unmarked one caught me unawares. Had I been speeding, it would have been fatal for sure,” said a resident of Kichlu Nagar.

Residents in some areas also complained that some influential people raise speedbreakers in front of their houses, apparently without permission from the MC, and without bothering to mark them.

Dharam Singh, senior engineer, B&R wing of the Municipal Corporation, too, admitted as much.

“A number of these speedbreakers have been built without the permission of the MC.”

“The speedbreakers on the main roads are marked in white strips from time to time. But it is not possible to paint the speedbreakers on the link or interior roads so frequently,” he added.
