Kolkata, January 3 The decision to increase seats by over a hundred in the Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta, (IIM-C) is in a limbo. The Union government is yet to decide on the reservation for the Other Backward Classes.

IIM-C director Shekhar Chaudhury had said the institute will increase its annual intake to over 400 in the next few years. But Anindya Sen, dean (programme initiatives) said: “We will increase the intake in the next academic year only if reservation comes to force. Otherwise it will remain the same.”

In the wake of the reservation controversy early last year, the IIM-C had decided to increase the number of seats in 2008-09. According to the IIM-C top brass, the B-school aims to increase seats to 460 and is developing physical infrastructure accordingly— entailing an investment of Rs 50 crore in the first phase.

The institute also plans to introduce a revised curriculum for PGP from the next academic year. The annual intake for the doctoral programme will also increase by 20, Chaudhary told reporters on the sidelines of Intaglio, the three-day annual B-school meet.

This year, Intaglio has seen participation from almost 4,000 students from 112 institutes across the world in the preliminary rounds.

At least 35 international institutes including Wharton School, Washington University, Carnegie Mellon University, UCLA Anderson school of Management of US, University of Toronto and ESCP-EAP of France have participated in the event.
