Mumbai A constable, who was in the hijacked Mumbai police vehicle, survived the Wednesday night mayhem to recount the horror of how ATS chief Hemant Karkare and two other top officers of Mumbai police were gunned down inside the Toyota Qualis by a terrorist duo fleeing from CST.

Injured Constable Arun Jadhav was in the vehicle whose tyre burst when the desperadoes had commandeered it in their attempt to flee from police chase.

Karkare, encounter specialist Vijay Salaskar and Additional Commissioner of Police Ashok Kamte, who were all travelling in the same vehicle, were shot dead along with three constables by the terrorists.

The top officers were on way to Cama Hospital, just a 10-minute drive from CST station, to check on another injured officer Sadanand Date.

"When we were informed that Sadanand Date has been injured at the firing in Cama Hospital Karkare, Kamte, Salaskar and four constables left from CST to the spot.

"Five minutes later, two persons carrying AK-47 rifles emerged from behind a tree and started firing at out vehicle," said Jadhav, who was hit by two bullets in his right arm and is recuperating in the Bombay Hospital.

Sitting on his bed on the 14th floor of the hospital, Jadhav, who has been in the police service for the past 12 years, said the exact number of shots fired at the police car was not known, but the three top officers and as many constables were killed on the spot. Jadhav was the only person in the vehicle who survived.

"I have been working with Salaskar my entire police career but I could not do anything to save his life," he said with tears rolling down his eyes.

While Salaskar was at the wheel, Kamte was in the front seat and Karkare in the second row with the four Constables, including Jadhav, at the back seat.

"The two terrorists then came up to our vehicle and pulled out Karkare, Kamte and Salaskar's bodies out and threw them on the road. Thinking that we (Constables) are also dead, the terrorists then got into the car and started driving towards Metro junction," Jadhav said.

They fired three rounds at journalists and police vans standing at Metro junction and then sped away towards Vidhan Bhawan in south Mumbai, where again they fired some rounds.

"The terrorists then started driving from Vidhan Bhawan when the car's tyre burst. They then got off the car and ran towards another vehicle," he said.

Jadhav then got in touch with the police control and informed them about the death of Karkare, Kamte, Salaskar and the three Constables.

"Additional Commissioner of Police (ATS) Parambir Singh and other police officers then rushed to the spot and took the bodies to St George hospital," Jadhav said.

It was very natural to react in a way our officers reacted. Why make hue and cry on their travelling together. By any known record of terrorist attack, terrorists were known to hide in a place not moving freely around the city on road. It was beyond anyone's imagination that terrorists will be on road wide exposed to any reaction from our security force. They were at CST and when they could not find place to hide in CST, they left the place . It was a shear coincidence that they met with our officers on their way to next destination and since our officers were not ready for such behavior from terrorists and were not equipped with weapons to face head on with terrorist equpped with AK 47 or so, met with a unfortunate end. If you think rationally, the whole episode was very natural in iself wherein we lost very efficient officers of our country. We are proud of them but equally sad that even encounter speciallists are not provided with sophisticated weapons to protect them

Talking about mystery by agd on 17 Dec 2008

was watching video footage on youtube just after Mr Karkare was killed, in that footage it was apparent that the terrorists were in a police van and not hiding behind some trees or bushes like most news sites were broadcasting. The van was supposed to have been taken after killing the top cops . Mr Karkare was a smart man and to reach the level he was at you either have to be corrupt or have to be really smart. I don't think he was corrupt. Now the question of landing at the place in the situation he was in and with the police van taken over by the terrorists before the attack on the top cops does not add up, inside betrayal.(Search for Terrorist fired from a police van in youtube)

ABC Murders by act on 06 Dec 2008

ABC MurdersThis one has all the aspects of Agatha Cristie's "The ABC Murders" written all over it. The C murder (Karkare and colleagues) was the objective, while the rest were distractions to confuse everyone on the real motive.

Karkare's Murder was Planned by Mirza on 02 Dec 2008

I Believe Karkare's death was planned. He was called at the Taj so he could be killed. The BJP is the direct beneficiary from this terror attack. They would gain power and get rid of True Indian policemen. Karkare was one honest and true Indian Policeman. The Jews were also highlited in this whole issue out of nowhere. They want to gain sympathy once again. The jews are now teaching some dirty politics to the already dirty BJP. The jews like to use india as they used america and live on india as a parasite. Please wake up people.

Murder of officers a conspiracy... by Sufiyan on 01 Dec 2008

It was a very sad moment for our country when it lost 3 of its honest officers in the dastardly Mumbai attack. ATS chief Hemant Karkare was a dedicated officer and he had also proved that the ATS in Mumbai is not biased and it is not controlled by some politicians or vested interests. The investigations in the Malegaon blasts were evident enough that some anti social elements wanted to carry out blasts in parts of the country by blaming the muslim community. If Hemant Karkare would have survived, then a lot of new evidences would sprut out at this time, but it is sad to say that honest people are always surrounded by enemies. The assisination of these police officers was a well planned conspiracy and i fear to say that this mystery will vanish forever if it comes under the hands of corrupted and communal police officers. At this point of time all the people of Maharashtra irrespective of their caste creed and religion must unite together and may God bless all those departed souls.

We Must Act by PeaceMaker on 29 Nov 2008

Salute to these People....We must learn from what has happened in Mumbai.....how shocking is it that only 12 people has bought the mighty empire on it knees...its the time when we have to act...at any cost...

Witnees account of Karkare's death. by Anwar A.M on 29 Nov 2008

Sir,We need to protect Arun Jadhav being the only eye witness to the grusome kiiling of our Hero Karkare as this incident has to be thoroughly investigated. I am afraid the forces who killed Karkare might also kill Arun Jadhav. May God Almighty Bless the widow and family of Karkare and other martyres.

The dirty Politics Game! by MM on 29 Nov 2008

Karkare's Death was well planned in the shadow of terrorism. The incident took place when the whole country was behind the Malegaon blast and this was the very suitable

Witness account of Karkare, Kamte and Salaskar’s death by Suresh Rao on 29 Nov 2008

Absolutly horrifying as to how the 3 top cops were togetherin one place while going for an operation. The first rule is NEVER travel together lest anything happened .This is riutinely followed everywhere and yet our top cops ignored it at their own peril God !!! we are truly such an unlucky country to loose all the top three.

Please understand by Venkat on 29 Nov 2008

The circumstances leading to the death of the three top Police officers in India( please read India) in a split second should make us think --what made all the three officers go in a single van..what was the message given to them...was there a talk of terrorist attack already and not just the injury of a PC? We have to look at the entire episode of the attacks on Mumbai and not just the attack on the police officers to understand better the conspiracy...there is no doubt about the quality and commitment of our police officers...THEY ARE HEROS...there is something more that has happened and we have to look for that...is the attack a distraction? It's easy to point fingers(with all that has happened in the past) at our neighboring countries for a good reason...but our suspicion should not start and end with Pakistan..we have to look at incidents like this in a more inclusive manner...regional politics, global politics etc..in all this we have to salute our Top Cops for doing a great job

Personal Political Vendetta by Bindiya Shetty on 01 Dec 2008

People with personal agendas and vendettas can't bear to see Honest, Police Officers who cannot be politically influenced. It would only be fitting to Sentence all arrested in Malegaon blasts and their aids to solitary imprisonment for the death of these officers. Also, we need to find out who issued the orders for these men to travel together. PERSONAL VENDETTA.

Death OF Top Police Officers by agpathania on 29 Nov 2008

May their soles rest in peace. But if the version of the injured Constable is correct and factual, then there have been grave mistakes on the part of these officers.1.When a situation like this is on, then on hearing that one of your officers is injured and in hospital, should not make senior Officers leave areas like CST where a major attack had taken place and rush to hospital. that too all bunched up in a Qualis!!!2. When ever such senior Officers travel the security should never be in the same vehicle as they are in. The security should have been in the only place from where they could have given security cover, that in a vehilce following behind. This is a simple and fundamental principle of security, which even a layman to security as me knows.3. It seems that perhaps they were not aware of the magnitude of the strike and were under the impression that this was some kind of GANG WAR!!!4. Whatever it was Ihope serious lessons have been drawn from this blunder. RIP.

mumbai terror by ajay sadhwani on 29 Nov 2008

The biggest problem is that we are reactive and not proactive. In future contingency plans will be made to prevent attacks of this nature from coming to fruition. However, the killers will have by then devised new strategies to succeed with their evil plans. We need younger, intelligent and smarter leaders to manage the nation.

A Quesdtion by Ali on 29 Nov 2008

Sir,Who was the main target of Mumbai attacks ? IS it the the ATS top brass , who were doing professionally investigation of the Malegaon blast. And to show that they were not the target many innocent peoples have to give their lives.

Death of a hero by margazhi mama on 29 Nov 2008

It is too much of a concidence that 2 terrorist stepped out from behind a tree and the first (police) vehicle they tried to comandeer was that of the ATS chief. Link this with the fact that the terrs inside the Taj Hotel cheered when they heard of the death of Karkare. Who in the ATS was feeding info about their chief's movements to the terrs? What was the true message that was conveyed to Karkare to make him go from CST to Cama hospital?

Mr. Karkare's death a mystery. by Ray Kumar on 29 Nov 2008

Mr. Karkare's death a mystery. As rightly said by Indian "third version of the story" we smell some fishy thing in the death of Mr. Karkare, vijay salaskar, Ashok Kamte and the three constables. The void created by them, I don't think will be filled. May their soul rest in peace and may Almighty give strength to their families to bear the loss. We are proud of you and we salute you all.

will we ever know the truth by Bhanu Mehta on 29 Nov 2008

The top officers were on way to Cama Hospital, just a 10-minute drive from CST station, to check on another injured officer Sadanand Date.I would have thought that when there is a serious crises top officers would rush to the place of crime and try to catch or kill terrorist and not rush to the hospital to see a injured police personal was is the chief of the aTS or the police welfare officer

Karkare - the true Indian........ by Asadulgaba on 29 Nov 2008

This seems to be a totally different terrorist attack. It was only the favour of certain rightistelements to kill karkare. The terrorists running around Mumbai streets would impossibly plan, detect and kill karkare. "Kisine bahti ganga me hath dhoye hain".

Witness account of Karkare, Kamte and Salaskar’s death by Biju on 29 Nov 2008

Very sad, although they must be brave encounter specialists, they lost their lives without even encountering a terroist, can't even take thir pistols out from their pocket to encounter two terrorst. What the hell the other two junior officers are doing along with ATS Chief. Is it required for them to travel to visit an injured PC just to invite their own death. Let escapees like this lear a lesson from this. Be brave, lead from the front then you show others or your superiors how efficient you are. Be proud of other two NSG solders who fought and died for their country. The entire nation will carry you in their heart for your bravery. NEVER DO LIKE THIS.

proper home work and quick action by Harold D'cunha on 29 Nov 2008

Haste makes waste. Few extra seconds ground work, fully equipped 24 hrs police force similar to NSG commandos could have averted the death of top police officers. Sorry to say DGP of Maharastra is not a motivating officer at all. He lacks leadership qualities.

when all evidents are ready i Think the Indian government should show this to the world, when US could attack Afhanisthan and now pakistan to clear the TERRORIST, after their country was attacked then why not Indian, this time if the INDIANS keep quiet it would be a shame on us, i personally feel that all diplomatic relations with Pakistanis should seize, no cricket matches, Indian cannot trust them, this is the right time to Bleed them too, when their economic conditions are soo bad, strike now when the IRON is hot.
