Mumbai A constable, who was in the hijacked Mumbai police vehicle, survived the Wednesday night mayhem to recount the horror of how ATS chief Hemant Karkare and two other top officers of Mumbai police were gunned down inside the Toyota Qualis by a terrorist duo fleeing from CST.

Injured Constable Arun Jadhav was in the vehicle whose tyre burst when the desperadoes had commandeered it in their attempt to flee from police chase.

Karkare, encounter specialist Vijay Salaskar and Additional Commissioner of Police Ashok Kamte, who were all travelling in the same vehicle, were shot dead along with three constables by the terrorists.

The top officers were on way to Cama Hospital, just a 10-minute drive from CST station, to check on another injured officer Sadanand Date.

"When we were informed that Sadanand Date has been injured at the firing in Cama Hospital Karkare, Kamte, Salaskar and four constables left from CST to the spot.

"Five minutes later, two persons carrying AK-47 rifles emerged from behind a tree and started firing at out vehicle," said Jadhav, who was hit by two bullets in his right arm and is recuperating in the Bombay Hospital.

Sitting on his bed on the 14th floor of the hospital, Jadhav, who has been in the police service for the past 12 years, said the exact number of shots fired at the police car was not known, but the three top officers and as many constables were killed on the spot. Jadhav was the only person in the vehicle who survived.

"I have been working with Salaskar my entire police career but I could not do anything to save his life," he said with tears rolling down his eyes.

While Salaskar was at the wheel, Kamte was in the front seat and Karkare in the second row with the four Constables, including Jadhav, at the back seat.

"The two terrorists then came up to our vehicle and pulled out Karkare, Kamte and Salaskar's bodies out and threw them on the road. Thinking that we (Constables) are also dead, the terrorists then got into the car and started driving towards Metro junction," Jadhav said.

They fired three rounds at journalists and police vans standing at Metro junction and then sped away towards Vidhan Bhawan in south Mumbai, where again they fired some rounds.

"The terrorists then started driving from Vidhan Bhawan when the car's tyre burst. They then got off the car and ran towards another vehicle," he said.

Jadhav then got in touch with the police control and informed them about the death of Karkare, Kamte, Salaskar and the three Constables.

"Additional Commissioner of Police (ATS) Parambir Singh and other police officers then rushed to the spot and took the bodies to St George hospital," Jadhav said.

ashamed of our security people by AM on 29 Nov 2008

IT IS VERY UNFORTUNATE THAT WHEN CITY WAS BURNING THIS TOP OFFICIALS WENT ONE TO VISIT ONE OF THE CONSTABLES AT THE HOSPITAL. WERE THEY TOTAL BLIND NOT TO HAVE CHECKED OUT POSITION IN VARIOUS PARTS OF CITY.IT IS ALSO SAD THAT THE TELEVISION CHANNELS HAVE MADE THEM THE MATRYS WHEN IN NO CASE THEY DIED FIGHTING TERRORIST. THEY WERE CAUGHT IN THE BLIND LIKE ORDINARY CITIZEN. INSPITE OF THE JOB TO REMAIN ALERT AND KNOWING AN INCIDENT HAPPENED AT CST THEY WERE IRRESPONSIBLE IN THE BEHAVIOR. ONE EXPECTED A VERY HIGH LEVEL OF RESPONSIBILITES FROM SUCH SENIOR OFFICERSGOD SAVE THE COUNTRY IF WE HAVE SUCH LEVEL OF HIGH OFFICERS.

attack on mother india by nasar rahim on 29 Nov 2008

What happened to our beloved country will hunt us for a long time, I still believe that its not just Muslims who had hand in this they must have had help from higher and local knowledge. For these fools to come to Mumbai on boats and blow up, I just cant believe they did know were to go and kill the ATS chief, inside work. May god protect all Indians who ever they are.

Salute them by Biju on 29 Nov 2008

Brothers, at least they are not like our politcians, how many of us will be ready to fight with this terrorists in real life. They lost their life for, do not write foolish things which you do not know, please show some respect to them.

Third version of the story by Indian on 29 Nov 2008

This is the third version of the story of Mr. Hemant Karkare. The first version said, he was in the front line on CST with a helmet and a flimsy bullet proof jacket. The terrorists fired from the hijacked vehicle at him and the bulletproof jacket proved useless. The second version says, he was shot at Taj/Trident. And now this version. Only God knows how he was killed. But one thing is for sure, BJP/RSS have been delivered by these terrorists out of a very difficult sutuation very beautifully. It's strange that whenever BJP is in difficulty the terrorists come to thier rescue.

Very New and Strange Act by Haider Ali on 29 Nov 2008

We all Pakistani’s are deeply shocked that who those people are? I asked hundreds of people around me in my city Islamabad who don’t even support the Pakistani Military operations in tribal areas of Pakistan, who talk about Kashmiri peoples rights, who are not at all a supporter of Indians just because of Kashmir Issue, they are shocked with these civilian barbaric killings in Mumbai, Islamist will never kill a women write it down even Bhutto’s death is controversy here still, Blasts are the way they protest but shooting and killing innocent civilians is some thing new. I think one can’t find a single supporter in Pakistan for these innocent civilians’ killings. It’s the time Indian should see elements within their country too blaming Pakistan will take them on the same path they are from years

Heroes or Stupid Fools by Nilesh on 29 Nov 2008

Indeed ! I agree with you Vinaya. All three officers were utterly reactive and irresponsible to go in one vehicle. They died doing nothing? They did not die fighting and were just traveling to see another officer. How stupid.

What foolish Officers? by Rajesh on 29 Nov 2008

One can't believe states top officials gone in a minute, all together. They seem to have overconfidence on something and don't seem to have good procedure to follow during such emergency process. Travelled together; Could not react on time, No bulletproof car(maybe driving window down) Typical Indians-showing overconfidence and getting beaten in few seconds.

Fools by Vinaya on 29 Nov 2008

The foolishness of these high ranking officers does not really inspire confidence in the common people who they are supposed to protect. All of them going in one vehicle. This also puts to rest the theory that these officers lost their lives fighting the terrorists. They just happened to be on the path of the terrorists just like hundreds of others who lost their lives in this terrorist incident. And by dying so easily they showed their sheer incompetence. Words like "encounter specialist" etc for them appear inappropriate. Sorry hard words for these departed souls but cannot help it. Sometimes you have to call spade a spade.

Death which could have been averted by venkat on 29 Nov 2008

It appears that our administration were clueless as to how equipped were the terrorists.Had they had some intelligence information the ATS chief and other police officers would have avoided such an open attack and thereby we could have saved the police officials lives which was wasted without them even fighting with the terrorists

pakis backtrack by Franklin on 29 Nov 2008

We now see the pakis backtracking, itself shows their involvement. Do a narco on its chief and u get what u need of course all the roots of terrorism. Had the US bombed pakistan along with afghanistan after 9/11, the world as such would have been a much better place for all the humans.
