Vinita Kamte has set out to establish that the lives of her husband and other officers could have been saved but for lapses on the part of some senior police officials. Currently in Coimbatore, she will on her return listen to calls made by her husband that night. “I plan to take recourse to the legal path of action,” Vinita told The Indian Express.
“All the officers who had not performed their duties have been given a clean chit. The Government is supporting their cowardice while my husband, who had no business to be on the spot in the first place, gave his life for the nation.”
She alleged that certain portions of the call records of the police control room on the day have been deleted. “There are at least 10 minutes of conversation that have been deleted. I have sought records of my husband’s calls through the RTI.”
Vinita said while her first RTI application to scrutinise the phone records of her husband was rejected by the Information Commission, her subsequent appeal was accepted and, six days ago, she was notified that she could come and listen to the calls.
She will be doing so on her return to Pune in the first week of June.
“I have conducted my own investigations. At 11.24 pm that night, there was a call from Hemant Karkare giving the police control room all details about the situation and asking for immediate reinforcement. The control room should have taken charge immediately. The calls made between 11.03 and 11.07 by my husband, during the crucial time when the firing was on, are missing from the police logs. Why? I am entitled to an answer and I will get it. I have evidence of the lapses,” said Vinita, who incidentally comes from a family of well-known lawyers and has practiced law herself.
Meanwhile, a bitter Kavita Karkare says, “If nobody had been at fault, I would not have lost Hemant Karkare.The chief of the ATS died like a dog on the street, but nobody wants to take the responsibility.”
The high-level committee appointed by state Government, which submitted its report on Wednesday, had said, “No police can deal with (such) a war-like situation”. Kavita, however, said the contents of the report did not surprise her.
“Everybody is giving clean chit to everybody. This is highly condemnable. (Due to this) common man would lose faith in the system. This time there was 40 per cent voting, next time nobody would step out to vote,” she said.
“Where are the people who lit candles at Gateway of India now?” Kavita said, asking people to come forward and “question” the clean chit to police for failing to prevent the attack. When asked whether she demanded to see the Pradhan Committee report, she replied in the negative.

Committees are formed mainly to get suitable reports and not for justice. Judiciary is the best. Some how I feel that Mr. AR Antulay's stand is vindicated about the whole "episode". Giving a clean chit to state govt and mumbai police and doubts expressed by the widows of two police officers who lost their lives, vindicates the stand taken by Antulay in parliament. Well, where are the candle light bearers and their audience!!

Mrs.Kamte is absolutly right and justified in calling the reort of the Pradhan Committe a sham and got up.The entire report is intended to extricate the Govt of its resonsibility and its failure in misapprotating the poblic exchequer.The entire police force has been used to self serve the politicians who are all corrupt.Even Karakarbwas used by Sharad Pawar to keep out the BJP
A request to the Maharashtra government, please appoint me on a single member inquiry commission in a single day I will complete the inquiry about the 26/11 incident and decleare that such an incident had never taken place in the first instance so the question of blaming anyone just doesent arise. P.S. I volunteer to do this totally free of cost provided the government assures to protect me from the wrath of the widows/relations of the 400 odd persons killed in the 26/11 shoot out.
Vinita Ji's concerns seems to be very important and be considered for actions for the safety of both policemen and citizens. If lapses have occured from any of the seniors they should come open voluntorily or removed in a procedural way to maintain public confidence. Such lapases are harmful not only to a state but to the nation and for themselves as well. Her brave move is highly appreciable and it is out of frustration on her loss and inaction or lack of action by respponsible officials.
What was wrong when antulay asked the same question about execution of a larger conspiracy. Vinita's allegations are serious and relevant. All wise people should stand by her side. We have all very well learned by now how these political stunts of inquiry committees are "managed" to safeguard those who have muscle power to direct anything untoward away from them. Even RTI is becoming tinted, thanks to the manipulators. What we need are some spirited lawyers to help her out and bring truth forward. Otherwise, all other good officers will also be looked at with suspicion. The fist thing a fact finding committee should do is to try to get as much information as possible by listening to all concerned. It is also most natural for any person whenever he ventures out for something extraordinary to keep his family informed with as much detail as possible (just think of yourself, what you would have done in the position of Mr. Kamte). It is quite expected that Mr. Kamte also might have said many important things to his Mrs. during the last minutes. Therefore it is very much needed to listen to Mrs. Kamte, especially when she was willing to talk. Anybody would doubt about the genuineness of the report if these lapses are there. Actually it does not need an immense intelligence to apprehend what I said. Then the question is, is there really willingness for a thorough investigation? Mrs. Kamte must be allowed to speak, her voice cannot be suppressed.
