Kolkata, June 27 Metro services were disrupted for nearly an hour on Friday morning after a woman jumped onto the tracks before a running train at the Kalighat Metro station.

As a result, trains from Kalighat to Maidan stretch remained cancelled till 12 noon. The police took the woman, Giti Roy (38), to the SSKM hospital, where she was declared dead on arrival.

The police said no suicide note was recovered.

So far, there have been five suicide attempts at the Metro stations this year. The number of such incidents is rising every year and a section of commuters feel that the authorities have not taken any step to check these.

Kolkata Metro PRO Pranab Dutta said, “We cannot do much in such cases. Though, security cameras have been installed at stations to check activities on platforms but it’s difficult to know the intention of a commuter of committing suicide.”

Roy, a housewife lived with her husband in Kasba. Her husband Salil Roy was clueless at why she committed suicide.
