Shivanki Narendra Bahadur Singh (25), the victim, was the daughter of a Delhi-based senior Income Tax official. She was crossing the tracks around 10 pm with her friend Bhavna Kandilal (25) at Mahalaxmi station when the incident occurred.
“A fast Churchgate-bound local knocked down both the girls while they were crossing the tracks at Mahalaxmi,” said Police Inspector Shivaji Shinde of Mumbai Central Government Railway Police.
The girls were rushed to Nair hospital immediately after the station manager was informed about the accident.
Shivanki died at the hospital, while Bhavna, who stays at Kemps Corner, is undergoing treatment for severe injuries.
The victim stayed with her mother at Bhulabhai Desai road. Her father immediately started for Mumbai after he was informed about Shivanki’s death.
“The girls appeared to be friends,” said a railway official who was present at the spot.
Meanwhile, another woman commuter was severely injured after she fell while boarding a train at Mahalaxmi station on Wednesday. Sughandhi Krishnan (20) was trying to board a crowded local at platform no 4 in the evening when she accidentally fell and suffered a fracture on her thighbone.
She too was admitted to Nair hospital. “The girl had difficulty in breathing and is admitted in trauma ward,” said Deputy Dean MH Shah of Nair hospital.
