Kolkata, February 24 The failure of the state administration to acquire a small plot of land to build a health centre in Dharampukuria village of North 24 Parganas, prompted a 48-year-old woman of the village to donate a 2.5-cottah plot to the local authorities.

“After seeing the plight of local residents, who were not able to get basic medical facilities, this was the least I could do,” said Minati Roy, whose father had also once donated land for building up of a panchayat house.

Roy’s husband is a ration shop owner and the family is better-off than the rest of their neighbours.

The decision to donate the plot was taken by Roy after she learnt that funds released for the health centre will be diverted back since the local authorities could not get the land.
