Kolkata, March 15 A 24-Year-Old woman, Debjani Sinha, died after being dragged by a speeding private bus at the Karunamoyee crossing in Salt Lake on Saturday.

Following the accident, the bus was gutted by an angry mob. The driver managed to flee. A huge police picket was posted in the area. Sinha, an employee of Tata Consultancy Services, died at NRS Hospital late evening.

According to eyewitnesses, Sinha was on her way to cross the road when the accident took place. Two buses of route number 201 were trying to overtake each other. The bus trying to overtake the other from the right side hit Sinha, as a result of which, she was dragged at least 30 feet before the driver applied brakes. “Her legs were crushed and she received severe injuries in her abdomen as well,” said Manik Biswas, a local. Sinha was first admitted to the Anandolok Hospital, from where she was reffered to Bidhannagar Sub-Divisional Hospital. She was later shifted to NRS Hospital after her condition deteriorated. “It is clear that the woman has been a victim of reckless driving between two buses who tried to overtake each other. We are conducting raids to catch the errant drivers and charge them under Section 308 of IPC. Their licences will be cancelled,” said SP Supratim Sarkar, North 24 Parganas. He added, “We are also looking for the miscreants who set the bus ablaze.”
