Mumbai, January 28 A woman died and four others were injured after a Mahindra Scorpio knocked down two pedestrians and crashed into the Dharavi flyover around 8.30 am on Monday. The police have arrested the driver, who had fled after the incident.

According to the police, Shehnaz Shaikh (25) was killed while Nayab Hussain (28), Nusrat Ansari (45), Meenaz (12) and Naik Velly (20) were rushed to Bhabha Hospital with injuries after the mishap.

“The driver, Mohammed Zaheer Shaikh (28), was driving at high speed and lost control of the vehicle. The Scorpio strayed into the pavement and knocked down two pedestrians before crashing into the side wall. A part of the wall was damaged and debris fell on to the adjacent hutments, killing a woman and and injuring two others,” said Senior Police Inspector V Latpate of the Mahim police station.

“The driver, a resident of Kurla, fled the spot fearing that he would be lynched by the mob that had started gathering at the site of the accident. He was later arrested by the police in the surrounding area. Shaikh has been booked for causing death by negligence. He has been sent for a medical examination to ascertain whether he was drunk at the time of the accident. However, prima facie it does not seem like a case of drunk driving,” said Latpate.

Naik Velly said, “I was going to work early in the morning when I saw this big car zig-zagging and coming towards me. I thought the driver was playing a prank, but then in a flash the car hit me and I was thrown over to one side of the flyover. I knew that others had been injured in the accident as well.”
