Mumbai, January 9 The MIDC police on January 5 arrested a woman and two minors for a spate of house-breaking and thefts in Borivali, Malad, Jogeshwari, MIDC and Andheri. According to the police, the arrested woman, Anjana Upadhaya (35), had engaged her two nieces, aged 14 and 12, to steal from houses in posh localities of the areas by pretending to be relatives of maid servants working in them.

“Claiming to be daughters of one or the other maid working in the apartment, the two girls would fool the security guards and gain access to the building premises. They would then check into each and every flat,” said DCP KM Prasanna (Zone 10).

Prasanna added when they came across an open door, they would sneak into the flat, steal something and make their way out. Or when they came across a locked house, they would break into the house in the night.

“We have discovered that the two girls are children of Anjana’s sister. They have been staying at Anjana’s residence in Jogeshwari. Also, Sanjay has two wives, named Savita and Sweety, who are also involved. So far, we have recovered two mobile phones and gold jewellery worth Rs. 35,000 from Anjana. She has been remanded to police custody till January 10 and the two minor girls have been sent to a juvenile home,” said Prasanna.
