Jalandhar, June 27 Several families today claimed to have been duped by a woman travel agent, Jaswinder Kaur of Sohal Khalsa village in Jalandhar, who is also head of a religious dera.

Speaking at a press conference arranged by Lok Bhalai Party, Rajwant Kaur of Talwara village alleged that Jaswinder Kaur had swindled her parents of Rs 8 lakh. She claimed the godwoman had showed them a photograph of a boy she claimed was based in Canada and would marry their daughter. She even asked them to perform an engagement ceremony with the photo and took Rs 8 lakh as “shagun” for the boy.

Rajwant alleged that they made all purchases for the wedding, including clothes and jewellery, but even after several months, there was no sign of the boy. She claimed that when they questioned Jaswinder Kaur, she threatened them with dire consequences. Rajwant claimed that after queries, they came to know that the photo was of a visitor to her dera and the boy was already married and unaware that his photo was being misused.

Niranjan Singh of Mothanwali village in Kapurthala alleged that his daughter was pregnant and was to deliver twins, but suffered a miscarriage after following Jaswinder’s advice. “My daughter was getting her regular medical check-up from Jalandhar and was alright, but once she went to Jaswinder Kaur, she was told that my daughter’s children would die if she goes to the doctor. However, my daughter suffered a miscarriage soon after,” alleged a weeping Niranjan.

Balwinder Singh of Shahjahanpur claimed that he had paid Rs 14.7 lakh to Jaswinder to go to the USA in 2006 after selling his land and taking a loan. But when nothing happened, they went to Jaswinder, who got them tied up with bicycle chains and beaten up by her goons. He alleged that they spend a further Rs 3.5 lakh on treatment. Rur Singh of Moga claimed he was looted to the tune of Rs 2 lakh by Jaswinder. LBP chief B.S. Ramoowalia demanded a special task force to deal with such cases.

When contacted on her cell phone, Jaswinder Kaur refused to comment on the allegations.
