Woman whose kidneys were removed dies

Ambala, February 18 Kanta Rani, the 50-year-old woman whose kidneys were illegally removed at Ambala City Civil Hospital, died at PGI Chandigarh yesterday after struggling for life for four months.

Rani was admitted to the Ambala City Civil Hospital after complaining of kidney stones. However, Sudhir Kapur, the surgeon treating her allegedly removed both her kidneys keeping the patient and her family members in the dark. Later, when her condition deteriorated, she was referred to the PGI where it was revealed that Rani’s kidneys here fully functional till she was admitted to the Ambala hospital on October 19 last year.

Stating her condition to be critical, doctors at the PGI put Rani on dialysis, which continued till she died yesterday. Rani was to undergo kidney transplantation today after her husband Ranjit Singh decided to donate his kidney.

Ranjit stated his wife had been undergoing dialysis every third day during her treatment at the PGI. Kanta was cremated at her native town Shahabad today.

Her son Praveen said when the treatment costs went beyond their capacity, the family had to move court, following which the government had deposited Rs 2.5 lakh with the PGI for Rani’s treatment. 

Meanwhile, the doctor who allegedly removed Rani’s kidneys was chargesheeted after preliminary investigations. An inquiry revealed that the doctor, Sudhir Kapur, had left government service and was running a private clinic.
