Ludhiana, February 25 The death of a woman led to a strong protest at the Christian Medical College and Hospital today. The relatives alleged that in order to mint more money; the hospital authorities kept on treating her even when they knew that she couldn't be saved.

However, the hospital staff said they tried to save the patient, who was brought in a critical condition to the hospital on Friday.

Angry kin of the deceased ransacked ward number 5 in the evening after the patient was declared dead.

A mob of 300 people thronged the hospital around 6.30 pm and 'manhandled' the hospital staff.

The protesters also halted traffic while protesting against the hospital authorities.

The relatives of the deceased grumble that the hospital not only failed in treating the patient but also kept on treating her even when they knew that the she could not be saved.

"They have fooled us. My sister was well till the last night when we spoke to her. However, she died around 4.30 am today but they kept doing experiments on her and asked us to deposit more money for further treatment," said Sunny Sharma.

"The patient was in fact an intravenous drug user. She was brought in such a critical condition that no other hospital would have even risked treating her. She also had septic shock and was Hepatitis C positive.

We not only risked the lives of our staff but did our best to save her," said Dr Rajesh Paul, Medical Superintendent, CMCH.

He added though it was natural to get angry over death of a relative, creating a ruckus in a ward and misbehaving with hospital staff is uncalled for.
