The request will be officially made to the IOC, the AIBA said in a statement, following a meeting of the body's executive committee in Beijing.
"The AIBA Executive Committee announced its full support for including women's boxing in the 2012 Olympic Games and agreed to develop a proposal and submit it to the IOC in the coming months," said the statement.
The meeting also agreed to introduce three rounds of three minutes instead of four rounds of two, as well as 11 weight categories for women's and youth boxing.
"Weight categories for women and youth girls will be aligned more closely with men to feature 11 weight categories - 46kg 48kg, 51kg, 54kg, 57kg, 60kg, 64kg, 69kg, 75kg, 81kg and +81 kg, effective from January 1, 2009."
It was also agreed to remove the scoring jury. AIBA president Ching-Kuo Wu, meanwhile, said he was happy with the ongoing Olympic boxing tournament despite numerous controversies over judging.
"The whole competition has been clean, honest and transparent," said Wu.

I hope you allow women's Boxing in the Olympics because as a woman boxer it's my dream to go to the Olympic Games, and not just go but I am going to win the gold medal for my family, my community, my country, and myself. So PLEASE allow women's boxing in the 2012 Olympic Games in London, and in every Olympic Game from here on out, because women's boxing is a sport and we do work hard at it, I know I work hard at it so I can master my skills. Allow women's boxing in the Olympic Games, and treat us fair and with respect. Thank you.
