History was created in the Rajya Sabha when it voted by an overwhelming majority a Bill to reserve one-third of seats in Lok Sabha and Assemblies for women after government pushed ahead with it, ignoring possible threats to its stability and after eviction of troublesome MPs opposed to it.

14 years after the first attempt was made in the Lok Sabha and repeated failures subsequently, the Constitution amendment bill was adopted in the mandatory division with 186 members voting for it and one voting against.

In the 245-member House with an effective strength of 233, the bill required the backing of at least 155 members and the UPA had the clear support of 165 in the run up to the event.

The bill seeks to reserve for women 181 of the 543 seats in the Lok Sabha and 1,370 out of a total of 4,109 seats in the 28 State Assemblies.

Ruling UPA constituent Trinamool Congress, which has two members, kept away from voting, while 15-member BSP, which has opposed the bill in its present form, walked out before voting.

JD(U), whose present Sharad Yadav is a staunch opponent of the bill, appears to have backed the bill fully with most of its 7 members voting for it in response to the call by one of its senior leaders and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

QUOTA FOR WHAT? AND WHY ? by INDIANS on 10 Mar 2010

ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF WHERE HINDUSTAN IS GOING UNDER THE RAJ OF MANMOHAN AND HIS GANG. WHAT NEED IS THERE OF ANY SPECIAL ARRANGEMENT, LET ALONE QUOTA FOR WOMEN IN THE COUNTRY WHERE WITHOUT SUCH PROVISION A WOMAN (INDIRA GANDHI) HAD BECOME PM AND THAT IS ALSO DECADES AGO AND EVEN CURRENTLY THE HIGHEST OFFICE IS HELD BY A WOMAN AS PRESIDENT OF THE COUNTRY WHOSE CAPABILITIES AND CREDENTIALS ARE ORDINARY FOR THE POST EVEN AND WHOSE HUSBAND HAS BEEN SIGHTED BY THE COURT FOR ILLEGAL LAND DEAL..... THESE LEADERS IN DELHI ARE RUNNING A CONSPIRACY TO RUIN THE NATION.......

Better Leadership? by A. Pradeep on 10 Mar 2010

If Indira Gandhi is the benchmark, one can only hope that India will soon have stronger leaders than the gasbags it has now.

Another set back by Ali Khan on 10 Mar 2010

Another set back to the country in the name of reservation. why we need need reservation. Political parties can allocate 100% of the seats to the women if they want, then why the reservation. It is all a politcal game to fecth the women vote.

This bill is useless by Balu on 10 Mar 2010

If this bill bring in educated women who do not belong to ministers' and other current politicians' families but interested only in Nations' development and backward classes and poor people, this is welcome. But as we know well all major parties will misuse and bring in thier own families under this and loot India further. therefore this bill is useless!

Cobgratulations! Next should be... by Adi on 10 Mar 2010

Congratulations! For the benefit of common women and To avoid family legacies/family oriented political business, in the name of women reservation bill it is time to consider to make some provisions. Maybe at any given time just One person per family can hold a political office position or something.

Reservations by Anant on 10 Mar 2010

In a secular society by definition everone should be treated equally. Therefore reservations should not be necessary. Every job, every position should be on merit only. One can understand that there is always a need for the deprived to be helped. For this there should be financial help, scholarships and education to bring such people up to the standard where they can compete. By reservations there is a great risk of employing substandard people in higher jobs or institutions where they can do harm to the rest of the society. I am all for bringing up the unfortunates, irrespective of caste or religion, to a standard where they can compete. Secularism by definition is free of caste, religion or other biases. Perhaps congress party is in a better position to carry forward secularism than any other party in India. Although today's bill is okay for a short period of time but in final analysis everyone must compete equally and fairly for a robust India.

Making them more weak by Sai Krishna on 09 Mar 2010

I guess reservation makes women more weak. Even though we may see it as an opportunity for women to grow, it is only a cosmetic change, making them foolish again. It is only making them weak just by keeping them like that without changing their attitudes towards life, and giving them reservation is like again making weak leaders. And Leaders should never be weak. I don't know why so many people are appreciating this. Desperation gets a change. A change given without it will never do any change. It is just cosmetic.

RESERVATION STILL NOT COMPLETE by RAKESH KUMAR on 09 Mar 2010

FIRST OF ALL 27% RESERVATION FOR OBCs SHOULD HAVE BEEN GIVEN IN PARLIAMENT AND STATE HOUSE ASSEMBELIES .THEN 33% SEATS SHOULD HAVE BEEN RESERVED FOR WOMEN BELONGING TO GENERAL, OBC AND SC/ST CATEGORIES WITHIN THE SEATS AS THESE SEATS FOR GENERAL CATEGORY AND SC/ST ARE ALREADY RESERVED FOR THEIR CANDIDATE .

congratulation and be careful from backseat driver politicians by Shridhar Damle on 09 Mar 2010

Congratulation. At last the Bill was pass in RS.Those who opposed bill forget that women constitute 50 % of Indian population. Pl make an amendment that no wives or daughtes or relative of current MPS allow to contest election. That will be backseat driving like Laloo did.

UNDEMOCRATIC BILL by Anuj Bhagat on 09 Mar 2010

1) this bill first of all denies a person a right to stand in the elections because the constituency might be reserved for women. This is UNCONSTITUTIONAL. 2) this bill limits my choices and provides me with a limited set provided by the government .... COMMUNISM. 3) this bill will ensure that the seats of the MPs who will loose their seats to women's reservation are occupied by their wives/ daughters until the tenure has ended and then they can take over . Remember Lalu and Rabri !!!

Good by Indian on 09 Mar 2010

I hope the same type of cooperation will prevail between the parties on the following issues too 1.Common law for all Indians from J & K to kanyakumari. 2.Family Planning 3.Reservations/financial aid based on need not on the basis of religion, caste, region etc. Jaihind

Reservation Bill by S Kumar on 09 Mar 2010

Delighted that the Congress, BJP and others have passed the bill. However it remains to be seen if at the next election, the parties choose one third women's candidates for all the Lok Sabha seats. Already some appear not to be wanting to do this, such as RJD, TMC etc.

Reservation will further promote the neta parivar to sent their daughters, wife and relatives for ticket by karze on 09 Mar 2010

Nothing will really impact average Indian women even if the bill is passed in both houses. After all who will get those reserved sets. Surely parivars of Gandhi's, Karunaniddi's, Thackerray's, Mulayam's, Lalloo's and other 400 odd eternal neta parivar will get these tickets. So its going to further disenfranchise the already disadvantaged minorities, schedule caste etc. There should be more than one MP/MLA for any given time from same parivar/family if India want real democracy. Otherwise present system look more like Jagirdar.

Next Reservation by s s iyer on 09 Mar 2010

The reservation for women is over. We want to know as who is the next in line to get Reservation. We also want to know from the government as when the reservation drama will come to an end or it will be a continuing process till eternity.

RESERVATION FOR WOMEN by RAKESH KUMAR on 09 Mar 2010

NOW 27% RESERVATION SHOULD BE BROUGHT FOR OBCs IN PARLIAMENT AND STATE HOUSE ASSEMBELIES. THEN 33% QUOTA FOR WOMEN SHOULD BE FIXED IN GENERAL , OBC AND SC/ST CATEGORIES.

manager by BOUSTINE on 09 Mar 2010

we should congratulate all the MPS who voted for the bill. This is ahistoric achievement for women empowermentand gender equality. The women should realize their responsibility and provide a better government without corruption.Like a good mother they should govern the household of India with out showing partiality or favours to anybody and fulfill the dreams of every Indian irrespective of caste, religion or creed.Bharat Mata Ki Jay.

Women Empowerment by Gope on 09 Mar 2010

Government should now ensure that 30% of every risky job should be reserved for women and they should have no option but to take up such positions. The government should reserve responsibility for the women for at least 30% of all wrongs and bad things in society and jail the women in equal proportion rather than absolving them of all blame. just because they are women.

wasteful expense by zyx on 09 Mar 2010

why so much money is spent on security of lalu, mulayam, sharad yadav---they are not ministers---they take all the benefit -why?

Consultant by Gurdev Singh on 09 Mar 2010

All the women in India deserve recognition and this amendment granting 33% reservation in Lok Sabha & State Assembiles is a commendable effort on those who supported the bill. Congratulations to all those voted for the amendment. All those who did not vote for the amnedment should join hands and strenthen the parliamentary system. All those women irrespective of caste , religions and social status who are going to enter into the politics and are to be elected should show to INDIA and to the WORLD that they can really make INDIA free of corruption and the Government for the people and not for the Elite Group.
