In a press release, the Chandigarh Police appealed to the residents, particularly the youth, to follow traffic rules and regulations and warned them against indulging in hooliganism on February 14, i.e. tomorrow.

“According to the past experiences on Valentine’s Day, commuters face problems like dangerous and rash driving of overloaded vehicles, use of pressure horns, teasing and unsolicited gifts and flowers. In case anybody is caught indulging in such activities, he shall not be spared,” said a senior police officer.

There will be strict vigil in areas around coeducation colleges, girls’ hostels and the Panjab University campus. The Geri Route (from Hotel Mountview to Sector 10-11 intersection) will be a “no-vehicle zone” till 5 pm. The Chandigarh Police’s women officers, in plainclothes, will be deployed at certain locations.

Besides the traffic police, the police control room and police stations staff, and CID officers in civvies will also remain deployed in and around the colleges and PU. Special check posts will be set up at busy marketplaces to check any traffic congestion and snarls.

“The general public, particularly the youngsters, are advised to celebrate the day in its true spirit and not indulge in hooliganism,” said another officer.
