New York Golf luminary Tiger Woods finally broke silence on his freak accident, blaming himself for the "embarrassing" crash just outside his mansion but did not reveal the whole story.

The legendary golfer, instead of speaking to Police, wrote on his website that he himself was responsible for the mishap.

"This situation is my fault, and it's obviously embarrassing to my family and me. I'm human and I'm not perfect. I will certainly make sure this doesn't happen again," Woods said on his website.

Curiosity still remains on where he was going in the wee hours when he drove his Cadillac Escalade into a fire hydrant in front of his USD 2.4 million Florida mansion and then ran into a tree in a neighbour's lawn on Friday.

The statement was pasted on the website after Woods yet again, through his attorney told the Florida Highway Patrol, that he was still unavailable for an interview.

Woods was upset with the media reports which alleged that he had been seeing a New York night club hostess, and that they recently were together in Melbourne, where Woods competed in the Australian Masters.

"Although I understand there is curiosity, the many false, unfounded and malicious rumours that are currently circulating about my family and me are irresponsible," he said.

"The only person responsible for the accident is me. My wife, Elin, acted courageously when she saw I was hurt and in trouble. She was the first person to help me. Any other assertion is absolutely false," Woods added.

The woman, Rachel Uchitel, has categorically denied having an affair with Woods, claiming the reports have tarnished her reputation.

Woods, a 14-time major winner, is scheduled to play his last tournament of the year at the Chevron World Challenge at Thousand Oaks, California this week. He hosts the event annually to benefit his charitable foundation.

He is also scheduled to hold a news conference on Tuesday in California but it was not clear if he would still play, or even attend the news conference.

The police had issued a statement that "the crash remains under investigation and charges are pending."
