Work on Panchkula war memorial resumes

Panchkula, July 04 The work on the Panchkula War Memorial has begun after the funds for the same were released by the Haryana Defence and Security Relief fund recently.

The Chandigarh Newsline had reported on how the half-constructed war memorial in Sector 12 was clamouring for attention for the past five years due to red tapism. Started in July 2003 by the Chautala government, the construction work of the memorial was to be carried out by the Haryana Public Works Department (PWD).

“It was after Newsline reported the issue, the pending funds for the construction of the memorial were released and the construction work for the same has started. While the PWD (B and R) department had pegged the cost at Rs 21.41 lakh for the project, Rs 9.27 lakh has already been spent on the construction work”, said an official of the Zila Sainik Board on condition of anonymity. He added the work was stopped as the remaining Rs 12.14 lakh had not been provided for the construction of the project.

“A special four-member committee has been constituted by the PWD (B and R) that would supervise the project. The construction work is expected to be complete in two months time”, added the official. The names of 22 martyrs will be engraved on the memorial especially those who had sacrificed their lives in the 1962 war and subsequent military operations.

These include Sepoy Ram Saroop, Sepoy Gurdit Singh, Grenadier Om Parkash, Sepoy Gurdev Singh, Sepoy Sarup Singh, Grenadier Ajaib Singh, Sepoy Sukhdev Singh, Sepoy Rameshwar, Sepoy Tirlok Singh, Sepoy Sarwan, Capt Rohit Kaushal, Major Deepender Bhuchar, Major Sandeep Shankla, Major Sandeep Sagar, Flg Officer G.S. Dhingra, Deputy Commandant Joy Lall and Havaldar Rajpal Singh, Sepoy Pritam Singh, Captain Harvinder Singh,Major Navneet Vats and Lt Col Rajiv Bakshi.
