New Delhi, January 22 Delhi Urban Development and PWD Minister Rajkumar Chauhan on Tuesday inspected the development work on the disused canal road in Geeta Colony and the site for Ring Road by-pass to be constructed behind Salimgarh Fort.

The minister announced that all formalities have been completed for the construction of the by-pass. He said this road is required because of the increasing traffic jams on the Ring Road. The proposed road starts from Hanuman Setu and finishes at Ring Road Balodram.

Chauhan said the 5.5-km stretch will cost the government Rs 661 crore. He said a proposal seeking sanction for this road will be sent to the Cabinet and work on the project will begin soon after that. The construction of the road is tentatively slotted to commence in July. The minister has also directed officials to plant trees along the road for a greener environment. He said the construction work will be completed within two years.

On the Geeta Colony disused canal road, Chauhan pointed out that the construction work on this project will be completed and opened to the public in the last week of March.

He said a total of Rs 100 crore has been spent on this plan. The minister said the decision to build this road between Pushta Road and Karkari Mor had been taken in the Masterplan of 2001 to reduce traffic pressure on Vikas Marg. It would be connected to the bridge, which is being constructed in Geeta Colony. He said a two-lane bridge will also be built on it. The work on this road was initiated in 2004.
