Workshop on Panchayati Raj organised

Chandigarh, February 12 A workshop on the functioning of Panchayati Raj Institutions in Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh was organised at the Centre for Research in Rural and Industrial Development (CRRID) on Tuesday. Prof P P Balan, Professor and Director, Panchayati Raj wing, welcomed the 47 elected representatives of village panchayats, intermediate panchayats and Zila Panchayats, of the three states.

Dr Rashpal Malhotra, CRRID Director general, said that the empowerments of PRIs in north Indian states are slower than other states like Kerala and Madhya Pradesh.

Dr B K Pattanaik, Senior Faculty Member delivered a lecture on Rural Local Self Government in India.

The presentation was followed by a discussion. Many participants argued that funds should be provided directly to the panchayats by the center.
