Chandigarh, January 31 The Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care, PGIMER, will organise the second Perioperative and Critical Care Trans-Esophageal Echocardiography Workshop from February 1 to 3. The workshop is being held at the Advanced Cardiac Centre at PGIMER and is the inaugural event at the newly constructed centre. The workshop is an annual feature aimed to train anaesthesiologists in the use of a relatively new technique.

Echocardiography is a non-invasive technique used to assess the function of the heart and to diagnose heart diseases. Trans-Esophageal Echocardiography (TEE) is performed with the probe of the device placed in the esophagus, or food pipe and is used for monitoring during surgery. TEE helps in diagnosis of heart lesions, guides the surgeon during operation and helps in assessing the accuracy and quality of surgical repair.

Both congenital heart disease and diseases of the heart valves due to rheumatic fever are major problems in our country. In PGIMER, about 1,000 patients undergo heart surgery, while another 5,000 undergoing other surgeries have major heart disease. The number of heart surgeries is likely to increase dramatically with the commission of the Advanced Cardiac Centre.

Fortis doc’s paper awarded first prize
The annual national conference of surgeons was held in Bhubaneswar recently in which more than 4,000 surgeons participated from all over the country and abroad.
Fortis Hospital’s Dr Pankaj Garg’s paper titled “Treatment of Fistula-in-Ano by a new procedure-Anal Fistula Plug” which was amongst the short listed papers, was adjudged the best paper in the conference by a panel of eminent surgeons and was awarded the prestigious first prize.
Earlier, Dr Garg also pioneered the treatment of Anal Fistula by a new method called Anal Fistula Plug procedure. This method is a major advancement as it allows treatment of this dreaded illness by a minimally invasive technique without the need for any major surgery.
